      Application

I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Colorkrew (Tokyo) in Jan 2024

      Interview

TL;DR probably impossible unless you can speak Japanese (Or get a different set of interviewers). First they send you a coding challenge on hackerbyte. It was around leetcode medium level. After that, the first round interview was with two people. They asked some system design question. After talking through requirements, they would probe and ask detailed questions about the infrastructure (ex, how would you go through hosting this, how do you set up the CDN via the DNS config). Second interview was a one on one pair programming session. The interviewer asked some more leet code easy-mediums. Up until this point everything is smooth. All prior interviewers can speak english more or less fluently. Third round interview (rejected here) was with two members of the infrastructure team. The second member who seemed to be the more senior member was around 5 minutes late, as this interview was after his english lessons. As we get started, it is clear that this was the senior member and was completely unprepared. In addition to not having any prepared questions and being late, it would take him approximately 5 minutes to think of how to word the english for some personality type question. No tech questions were asked here and the interview was pretty rough, given that the level of English was not sufficient to conduct even a non-tech related type interview. Anyways, the interview process itself was pretty fast and professional. The company responded with the outcome within 3 days of the previous interview.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

1st round * You are asked to design a system for a simple webapp + api service * Asked about which platform you would host it on, different technologies you would use * Poked into some details with further questions. Asked things about CDNs, how you would hook everything up via DNS records. 2nd round * Given a string, find the largest palindromic substring. * Given a list of numbers. Every number is duplicated twice except for a single unique number. Find this unique number in O(n) time with O(1) space complexity. 3rd round * Why did you come to Japan * What are your goals for the future, where do you see yourself in your career

      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Colorkrew in Nov 2024

      Interview

Starts with an online assessment with 4 leetcode mediums. Then a pair programming session with leetcode easy and medium. Then a behavioural interview with 2 engineers. I was told that this interview would not be technical but because the engineers were not prepared or experienced they didn't know what else to ask. It is also clear from the process that they don't know how to actually assess experienced engineers. The questions from the interviewers were basically trivia questions. If you happened to have brushed up on the topics recently then you can probably answer them. It sounds like the company is in need of experienced developers who know how to build and ship fast. But their interview process is basically designed to assess new grads or people with little to no experience. Experienced devs with full time jobs don't have time to memorize sorting algorithms.
