Organization Transformation Senior Consultant (Experienced Hire) Interview

      30 Sept 2014
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Positive experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Deloitte in Sept 2014

      Interview

I began the process as a referral by a current employee. The overall process took 2 weeks. The first conversation was with my recruiter to get a picture of my experience. Basic questions - nothing too extensive. Immediately following this conversation, I was notified that I would have another round - the technical interview via phone. This round was a phone interview where it was focused on my experience within Change Management. Two business days later, I was given positive feedback regarding my interview - specifically my consultative knowledge being exceptional considering my experience being wholly in industry. This came with a confirmation I would be moved along to the final round face to face. My recruiter called me, gave me my interviewing schedule and prepped me for the final round as well as some topics to research (case prep). On a Friday I met with members of the Deloitte team. The first round was personality/behvaioral. Multiple allusions were made to culture fit (a comment regarding my high energy so early in the morning and how that turned him off immediately was a red flag), so I saw a bit of the writing on the wall. I had prepared responses in regards to these questions/comments about the culture of Deloitte and consulting in general, but it seemed a bit more like confirmation bias, which of course is natural. All in all, the first round was positive, we laughed and I thought made a connection regarding our musical backgrounds. The second round was the case which while challenging, not amazingly hard. I outlined my proposed solution within the framework of a change management process. Ultimately I believe they are looking to get a picture of how you think strategically and I was told I did well. After the case, I was able to ask questions. Again, a pleasant round. The final round was "focus" which was about my fit and passion. I had 3-4 reasons why Deloitte was where I want to be and my career goals. Seemed pleasant and again I thought I created a connection with the interviewer. After this, I was walked out. I gave each interviewer my business card and sent thank you e-mails. Because the recruiter told me that those who get the job typically get a verbal offer the same day or the very next, I knew I didn't get the job by Monday mid morning as everything was silent. This in addition to the mutliple allusions to culture and "making sure this is what I want to do." On the following Tuesday I did get an email from the recruiter who scheduled time to speak with me that morning and confirmed my gut feeling. The feedback was that while no one had anything particularly negative to say and commended my experience, I did not have enough external consulting experience. I asked how was I to get exposure into something before getting exposure into something, it was suggested I find independent volunteer consulting opportunities, get more education, certifications, the generic feedback.... including taking the gloabal experience I have had via industry and get it on my own... I couldn't help by let out a small laugh. The recruiter laughed too. I think we both knew it was a culture fit more than anything else, which is fine. She seemed extremely apologetic and understanding of my dissapointment. She encouraged for me to keep in touch and reach out for other opportunities "down the road." All in all it was a pleasant experience. I was able to make it to the final round of one of the best consulting firms in the world. I likely won't be applying again as the issue wasn't ability or capability but personaility.
