A few weeks ago I excitedly accepted a new role with a company that I believed to be a fantastic fit and growth opportunity for me. After going through a background check, finger printing, and HR paperwork, I was eager to get started!
Monday was my first day and upon receiving the laptop and onboarding materials, I was taken aback by a highly important detail that was conveniently not mentioned in the original job offer, nor any of the interviews or phone calls.
During the course of the work day, I was expected to consent to continuous video surveillance via webcam. Not only is this a major invasion of privacy, it displays an immediate lack of trust in new hires and foreshadows the micromanaging that is yet to come. This type of management is not conducive to a healthy and productive work environment. Most importantly it is a huge red flag that they left this detail out until after I had accepted the offer.
