      Easy interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Frogwares in Jan 2022

      Interview

Their Recruited approached me for the position through Fiverr, my previous place of work. Scheduling the interview was easy and fast, immediately sending out a project. The Project was well-structured and Frogwares knew exactly what they were looking for, with clear, concise messages and a clearly defined goal and expectations. It was very easy to set up the project before the interview and the company seems to have a very positive culture.

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Frogwares (Kyiv, Kyiv) in Nov 2023

      Interview

After quite a nice chat with HR, I've got a task to do. Pretty big task, might I add... When I got the evaluation back, I felt like someone punched in the stomach. Most of the negative feedback I received was exactly what they put in the task requirements! For example, in the task, it was clearly pointed out that dialogue shouldn't give all the clues, and then they told me I didn't have all the clues in the dialogue, which is bad... For other tasks, they gave a limit on pages instead of the word count, which is kind of insane since, with a font small enough, I can squeeze 10 pages into 1. And again, they gave MANY requirements that were later criticized by the evaluators... And for the last task, they gave you a limit as long as the task summary, but ask you to write it in Lovecraft style. Good luck with that! They ask for clear struture, want you to proof you know tools, then totally ignore that part of the task. And the evaluator wrote me I didn't put a fight with a monster in my quest text when I clearly did, which makes me think they didn't even put time into reading it thoroughly. Yet they make you spend a lot of time on the task itself... All in all, I think they first gave limits and requirements, then totally forgot about them later. Or different people wrote the task, different people checked the results... I dunno, but don't waste your time on them. They don't seem to even know what they expect from the candidate as somebody already mentioned here.

      Narrative Designer Interview

      Positive experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Frogwares (Kyiv, Kyiv) in Sept 2023

      Interview

      - Applied to the remote position via email as stated on the website, but they ended up not replying on there. - HR Manager added me on LinkedIn some weeks after without a note, but it was appreciated! - One month later I wrote to the HR Manager asking if they were still looking. They said yes, and then invited me for an interview over Google Meets the next day. - The HR Interview was short, non-personal, and about my interest in the company and role. - I was asked at the end about completing a test, and then sent a writing test (which was fun and clear) and asked to estimate how long it would take me to complete; I said a week. - The writing test was made up of 3 parts testing on different Narrative Design skills. I ended up submitting around 4 pages. - I was then invited for a Technical Interview and Evaluation over Google Meets, where I met the lead of Localisation, Quest Design, and Production. The HR Manager accompanied. - This interview was more personal, and then followed by a series of professional questions. At the end I was told that the evaluation part was actually the decision they needed to make, and no more tests would follow. They also gave me good, critical feedback about my test and the risks I took in it. - After the tech interview, I wrote to the HR Manager saying thanks, and they replied that they would reach out next week with good news. - Unfortunately, they reached out the next week with bad news for me, citing the need for a more senior person, but were kind and even apologetic about it. - I added the participants on LinkedIn and they were happy to stay in touch for the future. Overall, I had to chase the position a bit and do a significant amount of work for the writing test, but it was very fun and the interviewing experience was pleasant - questions were aimed at understanding if I had previous experience in certain areas, and it never felt like anyone was gunning for me with tough questions or trying to trick me. The people here seem kind, and they were quick to review my application and respectful all the way through. I do wish they would add some years of experience more or 'Senior' in the title as requirements for their job, if that's what they're looking for - but I respect that it can be hard to pinpoint a middle ground between Mid and Senior level. There might've been a miscommunication between the hiring manager and the team, as I think the manager thought I was getting hired at first. I got my hopes up a bit which was a little rough, but in the end I would look forward to applying there again if the opportunity presents itself, and love their games nonetheless!

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

      - Could you tell us a bit about yourself and who you are? - Why do you want to work here? - Who do you report to when you do Narrative Design work, is it a Lead of Narrative, or Production? - Who is responsible for giving you tasks at your current job? - How are these tasks organised and how do you manage and track them? - What is your experience with production and agile? - Do you consider yourself a gamer? - How much experience do you have with X type of games? (X type is a game type I can't disclose, but for example: fantasy, strategy, action, horror) - What does your creation process look like when you are writing? - What was your inspiration for this test? - Have you ever had to collaborate with other departments? - What is something you worked on that required cross-departmental collaboration? - What are some games you have played recently, and what did you enjoy about them? - How do you deal with critical feedback? - Can we give you some critical feedback on your test? - What is your 5 year career plan, what role do you see yourself occupying in the future? - What did you like about this role? - How would you approach narrative design for an IP that doesn't exist, that is new? - How do you fare with not being guided in your work, and approaching it from an independent angle? - What are your salary expectations? - When can you start working? - Do you have any questions for us?
