I recently interviewed for this senior legal position with the Talent Manager and HR Director. The job posting listed an ambiguous title of "Senior Associate GC" that I had never come across before and a requirement of 15+ years of experience. However, it became clear that it is actually a sole General Counsel role managing the entire legal department as there are no other in-house lawyers. In spite of that, the compensation range discussed during the interview ($195k-$220k) falls significantly below market rate for this level of responsibility and experience requirement. When I raised this concern and requested clarification on the job title and scope, I did not receive adequate explanation. Additionally, the position was subsequently reposted without any communication regarding the outcome of my interview. I was not disappointed to learn that I was not moving forward in the interview process as the lack of follow-up provided clarity on the company's position and priorities. Overall, I would advise prospective candidates to thoroughly research compensation benchmarks for similar roles before interviewing as the job title appears to be a deliberate attempt to underpay for this role.
