I applied online through Linkedin. The hiring manager responded and scheduled for the first interview in a couple of days. The first interview felt good and the hiring manager was enthusiastic about my profile and skillset.
I did find it funny that there was no recruiter screening call prior to discuss semantics and expected salary. I decided to go for an optional design challenge as I thought it would help me stand out.
Sadly, what transpired after the challenge is definitely disappointing. The hiring manager only got back to me on feedback on the assignment after some follow-up, with no clear next steps if I've passed or been rejected.
I waited for another 2 weeks and sent a followup, only to be told they've proceeded with other candidates. I definitely understand it is a competitive market but really would have appreciated at least an automated rejection email so there is closure to move on to the next opportunity. Especially disappointing after considerable effort on the assignment.
