      Graduate - Marketing Interview

      25 Feb 2016
      Anonymous interview candidate

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 months. I interviewed at Lidl (Kolding) in Jan 2016

      Interview

I applied online and submitted my cover letter, CV, and recent grade transcripts. About one month after I received an e-mail with an invitation to their recruitment day at their headquarter in Kolding, Denmark. Additionally I had to prepare a four minute presentation of myself. The day started with breakfast and brief networking then the HR manager presented the agenda and the LIDL employees (managers) attending the recruitment day. Afterwards the CEO of LIDL Denmark gave a ~30 min. presentation of LIDL as a whole and LIDL Denmark. The five graduate tracks were then divided into two groups (Finance and HR in one group and Sales, Purchase, and Marketing in another). Out in the groups we had to give our four minutes presentations in plenum to the other graduate applicants and the relevant managers. Some just went through their CV and spare time interests, which ended up being boring and some had trouble limiting themselves to the four minutes whereas others stopped after less and were asked to continued. I my opinion, the best presentations had a clear structure based on their motivation for applying for a graduate position in LIDL including their main interests from study, past work, and spare time. Listing your past experiences and projects from uni is just not interesting and you do not really show your personality and why differ from others. Everybody has had some work besides study and done varying projects during studies. After the presentations we went back into the main conference room were the manageres from the different divisions gave a brief presentation of their daily work, overall tasks, and what a graduate would do. We then had the opportunity to ask the manager questions. Then Lunch. After lunch the divisional managers performed individual interviews with the applicants for their division. Number of candidates invited: Marketing 5, Sales 1, Purchase 4, HR 3, Finance 2. The interview lasted 30-40 minutes and was pretty straightforward. The marketing manager had prepared some 10 questions regarding past work, study interests, personality, strengths, weaknesses, and asked about my experience with shopping in LIDL, as I mentioned in my presentation that I had started shopping there as a preparation for the recruitment day. They could not tell how many they would hire for the different graduate positions (their answer when asked was something along; could be all five or non for marketing). Overall a good and relaxed day with some very pleasant managers who showed interest in the candidates (especially surprised about how much time the CEO spent with us during lunch). Didn't get the job though. I made the mistake of mentioning I tend to work unstructured and that I was very analytical. The manager was afraid that I would find the first 9 months in-store to tedious and monotonic with a lot of structured and operational tasks.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

What would your best friend describe as your flaws? What would your mother describe as your main weaknesses? How would your past colleagues describe you? What defines (name)? (except for the typical: analytical, flexible, hard-working etc.). They want to know your true personality and not just the usual bs. Which I tried to give them and failed :D
