Spoke on the phone with HR and then asked to come in for an in-person interview the following week. I was to meet with the HR person I spoke with, then 2 additional people.
The HR portion was very easy because it was small talk. The manager portion I thought went well - I asked several thoughtful questions about the role, the team, and the future. I was asked questions and I gave answers that showcased my strengths and abilities. Based on my resume, I thought I was a great candidate and my enthusiasm for the company and the role showed, however when we were done the person went to HR "to see who was next on the schedule for me to interview with". He didn't do that. HR came in and said she received feedback from him saying "the scope of the job was too much for me". Honestly, I was surprised and shocked. I thought it was HR's duty to filter out those candidates that aren't suited for the job.
Ultimately, I appreciate the honesty but not that the manager couldn't tell me himself.
