I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Perellion (Mukilteo, WA) in Apr 2024
Interview
Part 1: Screening with one of the founders of the company with general screening questions. Pretty laid back and casual. Enjoyable.
Part 2: Skills assessment test with 13 questions focused on technical abilities in a variety of engineering disciplines. Challenging, but not intended to be completed 100%.
Part 3: On-site interview scheduled for 1 hour (actually took 90 minutes). Arrived 5 minutes early but wasn't sure who to contact when I arrived so I sat around their shipping/receiving department for 10 minutes until someone noticed me. A staff engineer checked me in, took me on a short tour and brought me to the interview room.
Six top-level people (including all founders) interviewed me at the same time with general questions and answers followed by a whiteboard session involving static and dynamic technical calculations.
Didn't seem like majority of interviewers were unaware I was coming in as I had to email my resume after the interview started. Based on the Q&A it also seemed like they weren't aligned on what kind of engineer they were looking for either (some wanted a design-focused engineer, others seemed to be project/leadership-focused).
Overall it seemed like a good people to work for but was concerned how things operate internally based on the interview experience.

Question 1
A machine tool has a linear axis that is driven by a linear motor directly coupled to a sled. (A linear motor is an electrical device that generates a thrust force via magnetic attraction to a line of magnets mounted along the axis of travel.) The combined mass of all moving parts of the
sled is m = 10 kg and it slides without friction on a linear bearing rail that is parallel to the direction of linear motor thrust. The motor’s performance characteristics are shown below. Thrust force of up to 100 N is available from the linear motor from 0 m/s up to its maximum
rated speed of 10 m/s.
How quickly can the motor move the sled a distance d = 12 m, starting and ending at a standstill?

Interview
First call interview screening, then a general phone interview with HR, and lastly a more in-depth technical interview where you present a project you worked on that you’re most proud of and describe it in detail. After the presentation you’re given engineering problems to solve on the board.

Question 1
What projects do you work on outside of your day to day job?
