      I interviewed at RuleTek

      Interview

Had my first interview at Ruletek headquarters. The interview lasted about an hour and a half. I sat down with two HR reps and was asked very general interview question (like where do you see yourself in 5 years, why this company, etc) and then was given a test to complete with a time limit of 50 minutes. The test was very long and focused primarily on logic-based questions that you see in a lot of computer science interviews. Although it was designed to not be finished in the allotted time, I was able to finish ~90% of it fairly easily. After the 50 minutes was elapsed the HR reps returned to go over some of the questions with me. I was then asked to perform some simple programming exercises involving strings and an SQL question. Finally, one of the owners came in to meet me and ask me about my background and some more general interview questions. I was called back and asked to interview again. I met with one of the owners of the company again and went over my background and details of the job once more. It was a very informal and more of a "here's what the job entails" than an interview.

I applied online. I interviewed at RuleTek (Meridian, ID) in May 2017

      Interview

Showed up for an interview, they told me I showed up at the wrong time, started to show them the email with the time and my response confirming it, they dismissed it, told me they'd deal with it. Interview was a basic "tell us about you" thing, with a two person panel. Then they gave me an exam. The complexity of the questions ranged, but the real kicker were the lateral thinking problems. They were not very well written. After the exam, one of the interviewers comes back to talk with me about the process. I gave my answers using the constraints of the question. Now, the point of lateral thinking questions is to answer them in a non linear / creative fashion. When I answered them, I was told I was wrong. I then clarified that the questions weren't written very well, and I answered with the information i was given. At the end, they made me an offer, significantly lower than the average for the position / qualifications. When I asked why it was this way, instead of explaining the benefits they offered they defended it, saying that only people with several years of experience make that (false), and told me that I didn't have experience (invalidating my degree, and the fact that while it is not professional experience, I am actually trained in what I am applying for.) The interviewers were pretty smug about this, and I'm pretty sure they are preying on younger programmers or under-qualified ones so they can sell them a low wage.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

If you have a sock drawer with 50 red socks and 50 blue socks, what is the maximum number of socks you can take out of the drawer so that you have 1 pair of socks.

      Interview

Mostly brain teaser questions with a few behavioral questions too. There was a very long logical operator map question too that was practically too long to solve during the interview.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

"There's two gatekeepers and one of them always lie and the other one always tells the truth" "How can you tell which coin is the different weight by only using a scale once" "How do you safely get all three passengers to the other side of the river with the one canoe?"
