      Global Strategist Interview

      5 Feb 2010
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Seoul
      No offer
      Neutral experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied through university. The process took 2 days. I interviewed at Samsung Electronics (Seoul) in Dec 2009

      Interview

The first interview is a 30 min fit interview with 2 members of Samsung GSG (one foreigner and one Korean). The questions are quite standard: why Korea, why Samsung, why Global Strategy Group (GSG). One more question was added recently: where will you transition within Samsung after GSG (GSG is supposed to be a 2-year contract). While the first three questions used to be the key to pass this step, it seems that the last one has got a lot of weight nowadays. People were nice and friendly but 30 min goes fast - you have to roll out your story pretty quick. Also, they don't seem to have your background fresh in mind - while on campus, they see about 14 candidates in a day. The second interview has 2 parts: a presentation and a case. The presentation is a c. 20 min presentation to 2 members of Samsung GSG (again, one foreigner and one Korean) with a powerpoint to prepare. You are given the topic (usualy tech related) about 1 week before. They want to see a coherent story line, pretty slides and someone comfortable speaking in public - management consultant style. Again, friendly people. You have a 10 min chat afterwards when they ask you again where you will transition within Samsung after GSG. The case is with another interviewer and is a fairly standard consultant business case (market entry strategy, profitability calculations, market positioning, etc...) but longer: takes about 1 hour to finish. No trick but quite a lot of information to process. I thought the overall process was straighforward - no tricks really. Problem is, at the end, how well you do at those interviews matters only to a limited extent. Your previous experience is much more important to them. So if you come from Intel, Sony, Nokia, etc... you're almost through. If you don't screw up badly, you'll get an offer.

      Interview

The overall experience was good. For internship it's one fit interview and one case interview. For the case interview, interviewer share-screened a deck with me and asked multiple questions along the deck. The case is relevant to Samsung business therefore retail / CPG background would definitely help. They will also ask you math calculations.

      Interview

This is for a Summer Internship. There will be one interview round, with two sections of 45 minutes each. The interview will last approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes. You will have two interviews back-to-back. - Fit interview (45 Min.) is a typical behavioral interview around your past experiences and your fit to Samsung and GSG. - Case interview (45 Min.) is similar to those you would see from management consulting firms; problem solving with given exhibits.
