Interview
I applied online, and interviewed with recruiter at Toronto office about a week later. I then met with another employee about two weeks after that for a skills test and further discussions about the role.
I applied online. The process took 1+ week. I interviewed at Shopify (Toronto, ON) in Feb 2016
Interview
I submitted my application online and received an email asking for an interview within a few days. Had an in-person interview, and got a decision a week later.
I was interviewed by two people, one of which I believe was in training. Totally cool with that, but maybe allow the trainee to ask a question or two, rather than sitting and staring at the candidate. I was also taken to an uncomfortably small room for three people. I was a bit unnerved by this, but became more comfortable.
The interview was conversational in the sense that I didn't get any "Tell me about a time when..." questions, but there is a very distinct pattern of questioning that starts at your high school experience to present-day. They're clearly trying to figure out how you like to learn, what motivates you, etc. I personally prefer this over regimented formal interviews that you pretty much have to prepare and memorise answers for, but, I don't know, I didn't love it. It felt a bit formulaic and rushed; it wasn't as "relaxed & conversational" as I expected.
As far as the vibe in the office, bright & modern, hardly anyone over 30, fixie bikes, yoga mats, dogs, beards, droopy toques...ya dig?
One interview question that is a big red flag: What is your current salary? Poor form, Shopify, especially if you espouse progressive HR/interview standards.
I did appreciate the quick response to my application, interview set-up, and promptly letting me know they were moving on with other candidates.

Where did you go to high school? What was that experience like? Where did you go to university? What was that experience like? Why did you choose to study that? etc.
