I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at T-Mobile (Bellevue, WA) in Aug 2012
Interview
If you have a good internal network and reputation, you can sometimes bypass a formal interview process. In this case, I had previously worked for the hiring manager and was able to get the job without interviewing. Normally, the process involves 3-4 interviewers, plus the hiring manager, plus a case presentation (Excel plus PPT).

They asked me to perform a case study at the end of the interview on-site. Then I had to do a presentation to the interviews as to what I did in the case study.

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at T-Mobile (Bellevue, WA)
Interview
The initial contact was a phone interview with the recruiter, then the hiring manager. After that, I was brought in to the offices to meet with the hiring manager's boss who happened to be the VP of Product Development. The process went according to my expectations and did not get weird with obtuse questions or tests. I was eager to get on board and ultimately was offered the job.
