I have been working at Compass Lexecon full-time

    Pros

Very interesting work (Compass gets many of the most high profile cases in EU Competition). Excellent technical level of colleagues (you learn so much from the people you work with, and are constantly challenged). Great work environment (friendly colleagues and real support from management when things are difficult either at work or in your life). Flexible work arrangement (e.g. working from home is very common). Work across offices with colleagues not only around Europe, but also in US and Asia. Pay is higher than with competitors.

    Cons

Some times hours can be very long, although flexible work arrangements allow for decent work-life balance

I have been working at Compass Lexecon full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Compass works on the most important projects in competition and damages worldwide; you have the opportunity to learn from very smart people, including lots of seniors with Phd; the culture and values are very important for Compass, and they make efforts to create a great working atmosphere, and you can feel that you are actually contributing with your work to create output of very good quality and based on sounded economic arguments; there is a great spirit of helping peers.

    Cons

Working hours and work/life balance is sometimes challenging, as some projects have very tight deadlines that require long hours; some projects are particularly long, so you may be working on the same matter for more than a year, which can be a bit tedious, they however make some efforts to involve you temporarily in other projects to the extent possible at least for a few days or weeks.

I have been working at Compass Lexecon full-time

    Pros

Compass is the leader in the (micro)economics consulting field (winner of WWL firm of the year in each of the last 5 years). A career here provides a great opportunity to combine microeconomics (industrial organisation), policy, business and consulting. Strength across the various types of competition law cases. Impressive transparency and trust from management.

    Cons

Nothing I can think of to report here

I have been working at Compass Lexecon full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Incredible people to work with, everyone works hard to foster a team atmosphere. Ample opportunities for growth, ranging from support for learning data science, to seminars on academic and case-related competition cases. Great salary - the company constantly makes you feel wanted.

    Cons

Work hours can be unpredictable, and you may be stuck on the same case for a long time as a junior.

I have been working at Compass Lexecon part-time for more than a year

    Pros

    - Excellent colleagues: smart, dedicated, helpful, friendly, respectful. People take their work seriously, but not themselves. There is an air of academia in that people care for drilling down into the details and getting the answer right. - Very good management: Yes, they are demanding, but they care for their employees as people and not just a factor of production. Everyone upholds a considerate, respectful and friendly tone. Lots of opportunities not just for training, but also advancing within the firm - the goal is to give everyone a chance to become an expert who leads projects themselves one day. - Lots of flexibility: barring sudden requests from clients for calls and meetings, you have a lot of freedom when and how to work. People generally come to the office at the time they like, and work from home/café/train/what have you as much as they want (within reasonable limits). That, combined with lots of understanding that family commitments can sometimes get in the way of work, helps make for a family-friendly work environment. - I have been working part-time for a while now, and I have received lots of support from managers and colleagues along the way. My hours have gone down in practice, not just on paper, and I have usually had the flexibility to fit work hours around child-care, rather than the other way round. - The salary is handsome. Bear in mind that all of the above applies to CL in Europe. We are quite independent from the US operation; if you are considering a job in the US, the above may not apply.

    Cons

    - Hours can get long. The flexibility mentioned above helps, but the work still needs to be done, and there tends to be a lot of it. - At the end of the day, if you have done your job well, you have helped a profit-maximizing firm maximize a little bit better. That's okay as far as it goes, but if you are coming from academia with high ideals of advancing the stock of knowledge in the world, it can appear as a bit of a letdown.
