Pros

Only pros was that as it’s an agency, you learn a lot in a short space of time.

Cons

They pray on vulnerable/naive people. People who will fit in to their mold and do as their told. A very controlling environment. No flexible working here or finishing on time, OR getting paid extra for overtime whether that’s working after work hours or working on the weekend. Honestly felt like a working donkey, but it was still never enough. No work life balance at all! And you’re told that’s normal, even when multiple people are having breakdowns. No respect for your time and hard work at all. A toxic working environment. Lots of gossip, fake attitudes and passive aggression. Don’t even think about being ill in this company either - extreme guilt and anxiety comes with it as you’re always supposed to work through the pain. I.E. you must work in the office whilst you have extreme tonsillitis. And, next time you’re throwing up from extreme period pains, don’t go home - just take stronger painkillers. Trust me when I say, do not work here if you tick any diversity box. Especially non-white people. The tokenism is exhausting (to say the least). If you have any weaknesses - do not work here. They will make you feel like you have no strengths. You have to be absolutely amazing at everything otherwise you will not fit in their clique. Women especially - if you plan on having kids - don’t work here! You will be outcasted, because you can’t dedicate your life to the job.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review. We are committed to building the best working experience for our colleagues and your valuable feedback will help us to improve. We’re glad you enjoyed working with our brilliant clients on causes that are important and that you appreciated the investment we have made in building a good office space. Your feedback on culture will help us to improve. We have always encouraged all members of the team to talk, share and raise concerns if they arise. If people don’t feel comfortable in doing that for whatever reason, we have an Employee Assistance Programme which gives colleagues access to 24/7 free counselling and advice on money worries, work place issues, home life difficulties and so on. Nevertheless we can do more to support our staff and we will. Working at Cowshed can be demanding; we ask a lot of ourselves and try to deliver the best for our clients every day. At times it can be difficult to strike the right work life balance so we try our best to help colleagues do just that. We monitor and manage hours worked closely and on the occasions when our clients need our support outside of standard working hours we do our best to give that support while minimising the demands on colleagues. We haven’t always got this right; we recognise that in the past as we grew and had too many clients for the amount of people in our business, we asked too much. Its great that you call out our colleagues for the incredible talent they have. We are constantly challenging ourselves to commit more to developing that talent. In 2019 we set up the industry’s first internship for the underrepresented Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic community which is going ahead this year again, despite the pandemic, and we’ve successfully nurtured three members of our team to become the CIPR and PRCA Outstanding Young Communicators in the past four years. We’re proud of these achievements but we know we need to do more, particularly in the area of personal development. Thank you again for your feedback and we are sorry that our efforts didn’t hit the mark for you during your time at Cowshed. We wish you all the very best.

Broken promises

Pros

The best part of working at Cowshed was the people. They attract some of the very best and most talented people who made it worth it. Self development membership was also paid for which was great but time wasn’t given to do this.

Cons

The downside being that all of the amazing people that do join the company weren't taken care of. Within just weeks of starting, my mental health was down the drain and the long days, never ending to-do list and emails at all hours, even on the weekend were taking its toll. I quickly learned I wasn't alone in feeling this way, that many had felt the same and left and many still there were feeling it too. This was brought up to management but no changes were made, we were just told to manage our time better. Training was basically non existent despite a large number of new employees leading to added pressure and stress when not doing things 'the right way'. 1-1s with managers were consistently cancelled because everyone was so busy and the promised hours for self development and early Friday finishes were the exception rather than the rule. Working late and on the weekends was also the norm and promises of getting that time back, were never kept. We were constantly told 'it will get better, just gotta get through the next XX amount of time but it was just non-stop leaving you feeling overworked and under appreciated.

Thank you for taking the time to share a review here. We listen to all views, negative and positive because they help us develop and hopefully get things right. We’re glad you mentioned our amazing people. We’re proud of our colleagues and value the difference they make to our clients . It’s true, it’s a demanding job; we demand a lot of ourselves and try to deliver the best for our clients every day. We know that at times it can be difficult to strike the right work life balance so we try our best to help colleagues do just that. We’re sorry that you didn’t feel we got it right. We are a relatively small, client facing comms organisation so there are peaks and troughs when it comes to workload; sometimes our clients need our support outside of standard working hours including evenings and weekends. Over the period of coronavirus it has been especially difficult to manage our resources to match demand from our clients and we know we haven't always got this right. With this in mind we have focussed our efforts to recruit more resources ahead of demand so we build capacity into the organisation before we need it. We hope this will make a positive difference. We are working hard to improve recognition with big actions and small ones and are committed to make sure our work life balance is good. Lastly are doing all we can to encourage colleagues to call it when things aren’t right for them. Thank you for your time and commitment and all the very best with your career.
