Pros

I've worked here for some time now and the fellow staff are fine and friendly. The company is fairly flexible when it comes to hours, they will accommodate a variety of circumstances, though I don't know anyone in the store who is working full time and anyone who is working "full time hours" is doing so on the basis of overtime. If you like very fast paced, manic and busy retail experiences you will be in your element at B&M the stores are always absolutely packed with customers. The back end (I.E deliveries) is also non stop with daily (massive) deliveries that need to be worked, these duties are given to everyone and anyone so unless you have a medical reason, you'll be doing it. This job has been just an average experience for me, It's a very simple job made difficult by some very odd practices that could be fixed overnight.

Cons

Organisation; the company operates very much "on the fly," the till systems for example are archaic, slow, completely unintuitive and a nightmare to operate this leads to slow service and angry customers who think you're incapable of doing something very simple, when it actuality the 1990's software on the till makes it very difficult. It's not helped by the fact that absolutely everyone seems to be a "supervisor" of some description, they're no better qualified (or paid) and their knowledge of the constant problems that occur is sketchy at best which makes your job harder and gives the store a incompetent appearance. The company have some very strange practices, for example, no customer service desk, all returns and exchanges are done at the tills which causes huge queues of angry customers, also ONLY the supervisors are allowed to put these through, which means calling one down (if they fancy listening to you that day) adding even more time to a very simple task (well it would be a normal till system.) Very frustrating for customers and employees as you can imagine. Communication is also non existent, I've never signed a contract or know exactly how many hours I'm supposed to work, It varies week to week as do the days. The management rarely speak to you (other than to ask you start early or leave late) this gives you absolutely no security and the constant fear you could just be asked to leave randomly at any time. I don't know anyone in the store who's signed a contract I don't suspect this is legal practice though I may be wrong. The atmosphere is just manic and fairly oppressive, it's certainly not relaxed or friendly but sadly thats the nature of this kind of store. They simply don't care about the customer experience (or the employee experience obviously) because doing anything that might improve it would cost money and thats a no no.
