I went in hopeful, but it ended up just being a paycheck until I could find another job. - Store Manager Dollar General Employee Review

Pros

Salary was decent considering it was the highest paying job I'd ever had, but it comparing to what most other retailers pay their store managers, it was pathetic.

Cons

Work/Life balance. You have to be willing to eat, breathe, and live Dollar General in order to get the job done well. Corporate is too cheap to give out enough payroll to have at least 2 people in the store at all times. They claim that they care about our safety so it's a policy that there always has to be 2 people to close at night, but in the mornings you're on your own. If the store is going to get robbed, it's going to be in the morning because all of the customers know we're by ourselves. In that sense, they don't care about their employees. In another sense, they don't care about the customers either because it's impossible to give decent customer service to everyone in the store when you're by yourself. You can't be in two places at once and you can't help more than one person at a time, plus the fact that you're on the register when someone else in the back of the store needs help finding something. I could go on for days but I'll stop there.

Pros

The job itself is easy. The cash register, stocking (especially the totes and dry truck) and cleaning are so simple however there are certain things that make it difficult, although the work itself is not (under the right circumstances.)

Cons

They never have enough people on shift so it’s always difficult to get things done. It seems like all the managers I know from the store I worked at and the surrounding ones are all so deep into drama it made me wonder if I was back in high school. Dry truck always seems to bring far too much and the stores are so little that overstock is a huge issue here. The reason I ultimately left was due to severe mistreatment and some safety concerns I had regarding some past experiences. I am very glad I left and I would not ever go back.
