Pros
Thorough training and education with each position that you hold. Steady employment. No fear of being laid off so long as you are professional and work hard to each the goals required for your position. Career starter. Not many employees dreamed of working in insurance, however, after holding your first position you can see the opportunities working in the insurance field and many employees end up staying at GEICO or working in the field of insurance. If you don't like your current position in the company and desire a different department or position, so long as you meet and exceed your goals in your current position it is very well possible that you can earn a spot in your desired department or position. Profit sharing is better than other companies' retirement plans, and that is not just in the field of insurance. Every year, it is expected to essentially get two to three months pay in profit sharing. Not all of that is a check cut to you, because the first portion goes into your retirement, which, when you're older, you will appreciate.
Cons
Excessive workload no matter what position or department. The workload that you are expected to address is simply too much. I have been told by other employees that end up working for other companies that you outwork your coworkers at your new company because GEICO works you like a dog. You're so used to handling such an excessive workload that when you move to another company, you have no problem managing the expectations at the next company. Semi annual raises that the company likes to tout as merit increases that are based on your personal performance are only slightly above annual inflation. For instance, I'm a long term employee that has respect from my superiors and colleagues in every department of which I worked. I regularly exceed or meet company standards for performance. However, my typical merit increase is only about 3% annually. When adjusted for inflation, which is normally 2% annually, I only net a 1% increase of my salary. This is consistent every year. So, the only way to surely increase your salary is to take on the next promotion that requires more responsibility. Human resources, as with any company, is only there so that the company will not get sued. Do NOT ever think that HR is there for you as an employee. Do NOT fall for thoughts and phrases such as, "we're a family here." If you want representation as an employee organize amongst your colleagues and join a labor union. Which, if you ask me, any call center employee should be a part of a labor union. Which leads me to my next point, the call centers. Working in the sales, customer service, and various claims positions requires working in the call center. And if you have ever worked in a call center... if you know, you know.
