      Problematic QA Management at best

      15 Mar 2023 - Quality Assurance Lead

      Business Outlook

      Pros

Good people, amazing health benefits. Extremely fast paced if you like that cadence of work

      Cons

While the people are great and wonderful to work with, QA management at this company is absurdly bad. Uneven treatment of employees across the board, and extremely obvious about it. Some people will get immediate responses, feedback, and even direct mentorship for upcoming roles by senior leadership. Others get absolutely nothing. Even when requesting help or feedback. You're tossed to the wolves. Everyone has their heads down hoping to stay away from upper management's bad side. Because the second you make a mistake, you're suddenly the worst employee in the department. And it doesn't matter what kind of feedback you get cross discipline. One single point of bad feedback will instantly bury you if upper management doesn't like you. Everyone is burnt out, nothing is improving, nothing is changing. There's no real solutions to problems, and management stifles anyone trying to innovate or improve anything. We're told things like, "Apply ISTQB!" but then get berated for 'bad' ideas when we suggest ways that we can practically apply it. Nothing is enforced across the department. Want to work on an initiative for a leadership promotion? Good luck when no leads will enforce any changes to practices. Want to make a small clerical change to software that will have 0 impact? Too bad, you're going to get filibustered for months. Everyone goes around leadership whenever they can because nothing gets done. Nothing changes.

      Pros

Competitive salaries Previously good bonus Decent benefits Some nice people Still some remote working

      Cons

What was no doubt an epic place to work and create became too big, too quick. Over the years they have hired egos at the top and has become a dictatorial organisation where people are stuck and afraid to speak the truth. Very much cliques and success has little do do with doing well, much more who you know. Over the past year I have seen numerous colleagues leave of their own accord or suddenly departure without notice. Fortnite is no doubt a successful product that continues to profit. That said the profit went a lot further when we were a 500 person company vs now a 5000 person.

Great company to work for with all the 'perks' but base salaries need improvement.

      Pros

      > uncapped commission structure for those in sales > option for travel if it's relevant to your patch of clients > package includes a week of summer holidays and a week of Christmas holidays IN ADDITION to your 25 days > complimentary lunch provided daily, up to £15 per day (from Feedr.co) > endless snacks & nibbles, decent coffee machine - all complimentary > lovely environment to work in / very family focused / everyone looks out for everyone else > beautiful new offices near Victoria station / very central

      Cons

      > old boys club in every sense of the phrase > males in this business make far more money than the women and on the sales teams they are routinely awarded with top tiered accounts ... > base salaries are rubbish ... completely uncompetitive when considering the number of years you've devoted to the organisation > major changes that take place in the business are held under lock & key until the very last moment ... this is incredibly frustrating in a sales role because you feel you're the last to learn about everything

      Not Epic Anymore

      Pros

      - Great health benefits and vacation policies (hopefully it continues). - Great game engine technology.

      Cons

      - Disorganized, inefficient, and in-experienced leadership. Game development process and standards are well behind AAA standard. - Career growth and talent management / deployment issues. Many leads, stakeholders, and legacy employees lack critical modern development experience and skills. Folks that are actually able to solve real, strategic issues are un-recognized. - Review process is extremely opaque, and unbalanced. Actual contributions, impact potential, and being marked as "critical" has meant nothing. I've observed many under and over value issues when it comes to promotions and rewards. Lots of legacy folks getting promoted despite not meeting the standards the rest of us are held to. All while folks doing real work remain in the background. - Making games seems secondary to driving technology.

My best role in the industry yet

      24 Jan 2023 - Producer

      Business Outlook

      Pros

I am treaded like an adult. I have a lot of freedom to work on things that I see as a priority. Level is not as important as skill. I started as an L2 and was taken seriously by L6+ when I needed to champion something. And I have since been promoted- possibly in part to them seeing me step up. Great pay and benefits. Full remote option is nice. My team is multinational, I wouldn't get as much from being in office as some other teams might.

      Cons

It's fast paced. If you are okay with that, then it's maybe not a con. But I suspect a new season every quarter and patches every two weeks on Fortnite is a faster pace than some people want. I have seen directors ask for changes on unrealistic timelines, but not force them through when told it's not possible.

      Pros

Unlimited PTO Pay is not too bad Free health insurance that covers everything Some of the people are nice

      Cons

Work is not divided in a sensible way Can end up without any assigned work for months, have to find things to do Even without assigned work, employees are expected to perform as well as people who have assigned work Some people have a really big ego and can't stand being questioned or criticized

Life changing benefits! I plan on staying here a LONG time.

18 Sep 2022 - QA Tester 2 in Cary, NC
      Recommend
      CEO Approval
      Business Outlook

      Pros

      - Full time employees have the best health insurance I've ever seen. If you only needed 1 reason to work here, it's this. Other benefits are competitive. - Culture here is inclusive and supportive. - Nobody bats an eye if you need to take PTO, like it SHOULD BE. - I like my team and feel like they care about me. We're all just trying to get our work done and live our lives. - I received an unexpectedly GENEROUS pay bump to account for inflation/whatever concerns this year.

      Cons

      - There's no "crunch", but QA has occasional OT. It's actually voluntary and rarely more than 2 hours extra per day, 3 days per 2 week cycle. I haven't seen anyone being forced to do it after talking to their lead though, MGMT seems genuinely interested in avoiding burnout. Just be aware it exists. - Remote work is great but if you're not in select states, you may be expected to move before promotion.

      Pros

      - Intesting projects and products. You constantly feel like you are helping deliver very cool things - Peopl are great, leadership encourages voicing feedback and you feel empowered to do your best work - Pay and benefits are the highest I have seen in the industry - Leadership really tries to help with work-life balance and encourages taking time off - There are always chances to progress in your career and move across disciplines if you want to pivot - Maybe the most important for me, Leadership cares about the consequences of what we put into the world. Being in a place where the priority are the players ten times out of ten and that will take decisions for the good of the users and employees over the good of the bottom line is very encouraging.

      Cons

      - Work life balance, when you are running a live game there is the inevitable fact that things will break eventually, and sometimes you have to fix them out of hours. This is less an Epic thing and more a "any studio with live products" thing.
