Pros
nice people and work environment
Cons
not flexible work hours at this company
Pros
Passionate colleagues and great mission.
Cons
Low pay, particularly toxic environment and no accountability when sexual harassment complaints are filed.
Pros
Provides the opportunity to work in a field you are passionate in.
Cons
Managers don't look out for employees. Mistreatment was common and action was slow to be taken to correct it once reported. Aggressors were protected. Low pay, expectation to work nights and weekends. Terrible communication across the board.
Pros
friendly work environment helping everyone
Cons
Sometimes there are long work days
Pros
Mission to improve lives of animals
Cons
Toxic work environment where long-term staff are made to feel redundant. Management from the top level to mid-level managers need drastic overhaul. The organization has had rampant corruption, harassment and mismanagement of donor dollar problems for many many years.
Pros
The mission is meaningful and decent time Off.
Cons
It’s just not a positive work environment if you care about your mental health. The work itself is taxing enough, but when management is pushing you beyond capacity without any care it’s time to say farewell. Being humane should extend to staff as well as the animals. They talk a lot about DEI and if you look at photos they try to show inclusion it is a sad misrepresentation of truth. The diversity is lacking.
Pros
You get to do meaningful work to prevent the abuse of animals in our society. There's no better feeling than ending a day knowing that you've made a difference for dogs, cats, wildlife, farm animals, and more. Most of the management is very mission-driven and devoted to creating a positive work environment for everyone. There's a Women in the Workplace task force that exists to ensure gender equity and a collaborative work environment. The vast majority of managers and VPs are women, and while several executives are male, they work hard to ensure everyone's voice is heard. Overall, it's just a really great organization.
Cons
It's not a "normal" job, in that there's always more to do. If you wanted, you could work seven days a week and would likely be rewarded for it, which creates some work/life balance issues. But such conditions vary by department. Some managers expect more than others.
Pros
They offer flexible work hours and schedule
Cons
This is a toxic work environment
Pros
Pets In the WorkPlace program Rescue efforts People doing great work especially in research, legislation, food/safety programs Flexible Hours
Cons
During my tenure, I never expected that this place would go from a depressive sioled environment to a year and a half walking into a hospice. It dawned on me that it's like going to the doctor and the doctor (management) is lying to give you false hope (that never materializes) either out of lack of knowledge or confidence and say the medication will work when in fact you know you don't have much time left. In other words, bandaids to solve issues. Especially in light of recent developments with the ousted CEO, the air is thick with head hung low employees which translates to low morale which is contagious and if you are optimistic and happy you are deemed strange. But I've come to the sad realization that this is HSUS. I knew before I joined this organization that turnover was high, culture was a non-existent and my interviewer and job description never prepared me for the role at hand or expectations. It is widely known that their onboarding process for new staff is poor so if you are coming from another non-profit the learning curve will be very steep and long yet expectations are high. SOPs are written in elementary style if they even exist in your department and managers are either too busy to coach, mentor, guide and exhibits a more warm deposition to others that do not work directly for them. Less than 2% minorities so lack of diversity in POC is a conspicuous, as well as lack of diversity across academia, work experience, exposure to different environments and diversity of thought. Like many reviews, if you are of a certain look you will be promoted not on great merit or going above and beyond but ...oh she's skinny and pretty! Superficially sad. Managers have zero management skills. Some articulate well but if you listen closely they make no sense, talk in circle or lack critical thinking or ahead of the curve mindset. So in theory, sounds great! In practice, the agency or staff will execute the job or come up with the creative ideas. Lack of stable data infrastructure Employees get praised for kudos (snaps) that are not earth shattering and this does not work well or motivate other employees because especially in marketing not all can make a contribution to warrant a snap (kudos) depending on their role. Too much favoritism Employees are praised for working weekends and nights but yet they receive comp days. Maybe this is the culture, but where I have worked if you need to work 12 hours you work 12 hours and do what you have to do.
Pros
* fun work environment * great pay and benifits
Cons
* remote area to live in * little opportunities in surrounding areas
