dying firm

Pros

They have a good reputation in the past so it is still considered a plus to have it on the resume. The two-week year end vacation is pretty good. Benefit is pretty generous, provided they are able to generate enough income that year.

Cons

This is an extremely top-heavy, white-male club, dying firm. All these partners couldn't bring in projects, and yet somehow managed to lose many of them. If constantly worried about losing your job, and forced to take a pay-cut as they deemed appropriate is acceptable to you, then this is definitely the place. This place is not recommended for long term career: uninspiring design generates zero income and kills creativity. All they've been doing is recycling failed/unrealized ideas and clumsily taking another shot at reselling it, which almost never works. The office loses so much money that they even put out a belt-tightening list to forbid employees "taking pencils". Think carefully if you're considering to join this one.

Pros

PWP is a legacy firm, so there are a handful of lifers there. You get to work on some of the most fantastic projects in the world. As far as design firms go, they are pretty traditional, but they take care of their employees.

Cons

Across the whole field of landscape architecture, the norm is that you work unpaid overtime to get the job done. This was the norm here. Projects come and go and as a result I got let go without much notice. The top partners keep a lot about the business close to the chest, you have to strive pretty hard and be dedicate to advance.
