Pros

Initially this seems like a great job for the person with the flexibility to travel. Paytech has a decent per diem policy and you gain a lot of points if you're one of the many that have to travel weekly.

Cons

Paytech doesn't care that happy consultants make happy clients. Seemingly they would rather bully the employees that ask questions about policies and procedures than to admit to their greed. I used to believe the high turn over was on account of the travel being a hassle at time but I see a number of employees leave because they cannot take the micromanaging and various policies that definitely do not show ANY appreciation for the revenue earners that are making management very rich. Consultants are only paid pennies on the dollar of what's being billed to clients even though they are the ones doing all the work. Additnionally, consultants are paid a flat salary even though they are not legally exempt employees. I'm sure a lawsuit is in their not too distant future. Paytech even went so far as to change vesting of 401(k) from 2yrs to 6yrs just to avoid paying the match. (Rarely, are employees staying past 2yrs at Paytech.) They manage professionals with over 10-20-25yrs experience as if they're just out of college and working their 1st job. For example, as an employee that has been with Paytech over a year...you will be told how to scribe and email to the client, you will be told how to plan a vacation around your schedule as if this isn't something you've done as a professional your whole career. You will potentially get charged for company expenses such as mailing supplies. Even though you are traveling, oftentimes weekly, you are required to work a standard 45hrs a week....I guess to be fair to the client. Too bad no one is being fair to the consultant. I'd like to see management travel for one month and see how well they do. 40hrs used to include travel hours but the greed has pushed things to a new level. Group engagements really should not be something Paytech is involved in at all as they clearly have no experience. They don't know how to manage individuals let alone a group of experts on an assignment. Of the group engagements I've personally been involved in...95% of the staff left...during or immediately after the group assignment. Why? Simply, Paytech doesn't know how to manage groups or individual consultants. The group lead rarely has leadership skills, especially with managing subject matter experts, they also like to hire employees that has no payroll experience. There is no work life balance at all. Billable hours must go to the management because it doesn't go to the consultants...who should be paid hourly and are NOT exempt from OT. You will be forced to work weekends, evenings, & holidays...only thing is you will only get a fraction of your pay when you do. (One guess who reaps the full financial benefits of all those long hours you put in away from your family. Bottom line is this...if your manager loves you and is supportive - you'll have a great professional life at Paytech...until you're on a group engagement, or you want to take a vacation, or you have a client that thinks employees should work 60 hrs or more a week. Also, the PM side of the house is probably where you should apply. They're allowed to have more flexibility to work remotely. They also have the respect of being a professional...& they don't need payroll experience. There is rarely a promotion from consultant.

This is a hard review to reply to because there are some valid criticisms for the timeline in which this was written paired with a lack of understanding of how a consulting business operates. Team engagements are something PayTech began to experience in 2015/2016, with several learning opportunities presenting themselves. However, this was not overlooked and was a featured general session at our all company internal Kaleidoscope meeting just a few months after this review was posted. What we’re most proud of is that the team engagement session was led by employees who helped develop the processes, hierarchy, and procedures from a successful team engagement earlier that year, resulting in several positive team engagements in 2017 onward. Payroll Consulting is a niche industry. Although compensation, benefits and travel are discussed during the interview process, to set our new employees up for success we have a week-long orientation at our headquarters in which staff meets with nearly every department, as well as their manager. Further discussions around benefits, consulting best practices, travel, communication and professionalism are all reviewed to ensure transparency and consistent messaging. We’ve received incredibly positive feedback around our orientation and are continually improving it, and other organizational aspects, as we continue to enhance our technology, processes, and deliverables.

Pros

Enjoyed traveling and meeting new colleagues and clients

Cons

I wasn't in control of my own life while at PayTech. I came from a background in management and I never felt that was considered or taken into account when assigning me. PayTech Management made all decisions regarding where I traveled, the length of time spent with each client, long hours (I was strongly reprimanded for working less than 10 hours per day, no work/life balance or remote work as promised. When the client demands were unreasonable, management didn't support those who were going above and beyond to honor their company. Their inability to understand the needs of a professional traveling consultant was disappointing as I was excited to work for them and enjoyed my work very much. I felt discouraged when I worked there and I had never experienced that before. The pay is considerably lower than with other consulting companies. Consultants are treated more as entry level employees while Project Managers are given the authority to be in charge of Consultants. Since leaving PayTech, I've made much more money, I've been able to work reasonable hours and I've felt respected and appreciated. Thanks to PayTech, I now know how I don't want to be treated!

Pros

Excellent training data base on various payroll systems

Cons

Although fully remote the expectation is for you to handle multiple clients and increase your billable hours. Very little work life balance now as on average many are working an avg of 50 hour weeks.

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review. I'm glad you were able to recognize the payroll system training we continue to compile from our partners and benefit through interactions with our incredibly talented employees. Our consulting positions are W-2 salaried/exempt. As such, we have the expectation that all eligible work hours will be billable hours to clients which may lead to working on multiple part-time clients. In a study pulled today, showed 7% of our billable staff put in at least one 50 hour week over the last month. For those that did work over 50 hours, they were compensated by our built-in compensation plans that reward after 40 billable hours as we believe in compensating for longer weeks which will occasionally happen during certain projects. Many find their way to PayTech because they're looking for a smaller more connected environment which do not have the expectation of regular 50+ hour weeks and allows for great focus on fewer clients. Our ability to deliver on that is one of the many reason's people choose to stay at and return to PayTech.
