Horrible treatment of staff

Pros

Flexible schedule, you can choose what days you work to an extent but if they don’t like you then that option is out of the window. Lots of favoritism is showed.

Cons

The managers steal tips from the staff. There is no employee appreciation. Very toxic workplace. Micromanaging to a high extent! No regards for mental health. Extremely high turn over rates.

Pros

-good employee discount -good food and drink

Cons

-terrible management -little to no job training but still berating me when I did things wrong (even though I asked for more training I never received it) -customers think we receive tips but they go in a box and we never see them again -different pay for different people. I got paid 17/hr for a summer, but my friend who worked there consistently for 2 years only got 14/hr. When she asked for a raise because she lasted longer than almost anyone else in the FOH (everyone that was employed when she first joined quit because it was awful) they kept telling her “we’ll see” and never did anything. Pay rates ranged from $13-$18/hr for the exact same position -condescending managers (at least in 2022) -shifts never ended on time. I learned that when I asked to leave (politely 15 minutes after my shift had ended) they gave me a “closing task” so I began to ask for my closing task an hour before I had to leave. I was kept anywhere from 30-90 minutes past when my shift should have ended every single time but I didn’t want to leave for fear of being fired or labeled as a bad employee -breaks are awful. 20 minute break for any shift ranging 4-10 hours in length. If I had an 8 hour shift I would ask for my break at a reasonable time, say 4-5 hours in, but I wouldn’t receive it until I begged for it after working for 7-8 hours straight. Then the managers would say “oh of course, why didn’t you ask sooner!” and be very condescending when it is their job to schedule proper break times. -management always felt like they were gaslighting us into thinking “this is a fun job!! You’re so lucky to work here!” But then get frustrated at us for not being trained properly even though that is also their job -I worked at the cafe in Nashua before coming here and I loved it there. I was so excited to come here but every day felt like hell. I wanted to learn to be a barista and repeatedly asked for training but they always pushed it back and then complained about how no one knew how to make drinks. This is coming from someone who has worked over 5 different customer service jobs, 4 different teaching jobs, and a landscaping job, the longest of which I’ve been employed at for 6 years. I know how to work hard and can suck it up and put a smile on in a bad work environment, but this was beyond bad. I love the cafe itself and the food and drink is amazing, but I am turned off from purchasing from there because I know how badly the staff are treated.
