Pros

The company forces you to develop an appreciation for excellent communication skills and professionalism. Also, there are many opportunities to meet individuals from diverse backgrounds.

Cons

The company is run remotely from Yuba City. I worked under the Mental Competency Assessment Training (MCAT) program. The MCAT program that I worked in was based in the San Francisco Bay Area, (180 miles away from Yuba City). The MCAT program supervisor is in Sacramento (130 miles from SF Bay Area). And there is an assistant supervisor who works in the SF Bay Area. There were many instances where the information given by one of the MCAT supervisors contradicted the information given by the other MCAT supervisor, or information given by the office personnel in Yuba City. Unfortunately, the company tends to pass blame on the individual with the "lower" position instead of admitting that a mistake was made. It is very important to keep written records of all conversations employees have with each other just in case an issue does come up. The company has various methods to track the locations of all MCAT employees. Cell phones, laptops, and phone conversations, are tracked. There seems to be a sense that employees cannot be trusted. The upper management tends to be less interested in helping clients and more interested in billing clients. The management is not as concerned about the overall safety of their MCAT trainers. The job requires a lot of driving and the company does not provide any services to help MCAT employees maintain their vehicles. The office personnel in Yuba and the Sacramento supervisor tend to be out-of-touch with the reality that the MCAT trainers undergo. When an employee has a complaint about the company or MCAT program, it is difficult for the employee to feel heard, and there seems to be a history of firing workers who speak up and provide suggestions for improving the company. The company owner and manager are husband and wife, and this tends to make decisions unbiased. The mileage compensation is low, considering the large amount of driving the employees undergo.

Pros

As a trainer you are truly helping the clients. The clients are what matter with this kind of job.

Cons

Management does not listen to the trainers. Trainers are vastly underpaid and over worked. Trainers are expected to be flexible in all situations but the company refuses to be flexible. Management asks for feedback on what does or does not work with the program but ignores the feedback given.

Pros

My 3.5 years at Psychwest were amazing. In this smaller company, I was able to learn a variety of duties and was offered a lot of professional growth. I felt like my good work was rewarded and I was offered the opportunity to expand on my successes in a meaningful way. My supervisor and company owner, Andrea, was amazing. She was caring, considerate, and a model on how to be an effective employee with attention to detail, consistency, and striving for always improving. She doesn't want a "yes person", she wants to be challenged and arrive on the most effective decision possible. Overall, the work atmosphere is relaxed. People are expected to complete their jobs and do them effectively, and if they can't, they should ask for assistance that is always available from supervisors or peers. If you believe you are an effective worker with a positive attitude, you will be successful and grow here. The office positions are demanding at first in terms of learning all that is necessary with the position, but anyone with the determination to succeed will do well in these roles and will be consistently supported by other office staff and management. The trainer positions that are available in the company are rewarding with their important work with the clients, experience gained from writing court reports, and the large variety of clients and situations you are exposed to. This is a great role for someone trying to gain experience in the criminal justice system. Additionally, the trainer position is very independent - you are relied upon to do your assigned shifts and notes that can be completed from home. Although there is independence, you are in constant communication with your team members and supervisors daily.

Cons

There are many negative reviews on the company, with most occurring before I started with Psychwest. Company culture and management changes have progressed the company a long way. There are many more benefits and wage changes that have occurred over the years that make things easier for all employees. The bottom line, if you are a good employee with a good attitude, you will be appreciated and be presented with opportunities to grow your skills. If you have questions, concerns or observations, all of the supervisors and owner Andrea are more than willing and equipped to assist you.
