I worked at Topshop part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Great managers and coworkers, good environment, paid and in-depth training, nice location.

    Cons

At my time of employment (the first year the store was open) there were too many workers and most everyone got very little hours. When people started leaving, management made it known that they were looking to hire more people instead of giving still-existing workers more shifts.

    Advice to Management

Encourage employees (in a private setting) to speak up about their satisfaction (or dissatisfaction) with their number of current hours.

I worked at Topshop full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    - Young Team
    - Staff Discount (25% Staff Card/ 60% uniform)
    - Admin Teams with experience

In-house Administration teams are hard to come by in retail, but with such an ancient POS system and 200+ employees, it's a necessity just to understand how they work.

A young and eager team exists, but the morale of older team members is non-existent. A high staff turnover provides what I like to call 'the everlasting honeymoon period' and allows Management to feel that they're making their employees happy- when in fact, they're just replacing old staff with new robots.

    Cons

    - Technology (so old it should feature in a Museum).
    - Management with severe power issues.
    - Progression (lack thereof)

Firstly, I have never witnessed a poorer till system in my years of retail. The company is so afraid of losing money, that each cashier requires a 'witness' for a refund, even if the customer has a receipt and is being refunded 99p. No witness available? Looks like you're getting ranted at from the Administrator downstairs.

The Management at Topshop Trafford are a very mixed bag. The Topshop Supervisors are the most hardworking and underpaid individuals I have ever seen. I fundamentally believe, if it wasnt for their youngest Supervisor of the bunch, the staff in that place would have striked long ago. The Deputy Managers are again, mostly lovely. They posess a branch of knowledge from Sales, Finances, HR and Merchandising- but one Deputy has a slight issue with communication, and somehow likes to believe that he is better than everyone else. Senior Managers are frankly horrific. The only competent Senior is leaving the store and frankly, I cannot wait to see that place cave in afterwards. There is one Senior Manager who makes no effort to talk to staff, this individual will look at you despite saying 'morning' or 'hello' and blankly ignore you. You feel belittled just as a result of her presence. Basic manners and respect seem to be outside of her ability as an individual, nevermind as a manager.

Finally, there are several members of the team that have obtained 'credits' through the companies AWFUL progression scheme for Team Leader or Supervisory promotions and they are simply being worked to the ground for no better pay, no thanks or praise, or a time deadline of when their promotion will be.

    Advice to Management

You will not keep staff for as long as your treatment of them is akin to farm-yard animals. They are humans and have lives, and patronising and belittling treatment from Managers is frankly abhorrent and uncalled for. Working hours are adequate, but one rule for one and one for another with respect to days off, holidays or sick pay simply infuriates your staff.

Review your store structure, you are losing staff because they feel exhausted and worn-out. Most probably having to work with the awful till POS system all day. Windows 98 gets a run for its money.

Reward your staff more. They uphold your store, and whether you like it or not, even a multi-million-pound refurbishment can't paint over the cracks in this place. HR need to investigate a few managers in Topshop Trafford, a day in that place would uncover shockers!
