Digital Function being run by people who have no clue about software delivery

Oct 16, 2021 - Software Engineer in Holborn, England, England

      Pros

ability to work from home, although expectation is now 3 days in office a week. After 18 months of proving our ability to work successfully as a team all of that is ignored because the new management expect bums on seats in the office to listen to their speeches about nothing worthwhile

      Cons

on-call is poor as assumption is always the issue is with the website code. reality is 99% of issues are caused by 3rd parties either their poor software or network changes made that were not properly changed managed. salary is poor compared to digital functions elsewhere, hence why everyone who is good has already left. I dont know what Engineering Managers do. They are terrible at hiring the wrong people & dont interview consultants to make sure they have the right skills, knowledge or can fit into the existing teams. They dont listen to us and make their own decisions. Digital now run by 2 senior managers, in the place of 1 head of digital. Neither have any experience or understanding of how to run a digital function & it shows in the decisions they make and their lack of engagement. Having 2 leaders is complete madness - how many countries do you know who have 2 Prime Ministers?! More and more consultants are being brought in which isnt cost effective for Whitbread and it feels like the whole function will get outsourced at some point. The consultants dont stay long until they are shifted to another client. all the knowledge of the codebase is lost. Permanent developers are left to pick up the pieces, they get to work on the mundane work, whereas junior consultants get to work on the leading projects. There is a massive brain drain happening & the new management team have pretty much run the digital function into the ground to the point that probably outsourcing is the only option. With new Managers who only understand how "ways theyve always worked" means traditional waterfall methodology is now overlayed on top of agile ways of working, so its back to being told what the deadline date and requirements are and simply told to get it delivered. This usually means years of time wasted doing requirements gathering, leaving very little time for actual development so all the pressure put on digital teams. Deadlines dont get met because the timescales were never realistic and the blame is put on the delivery teams rather than the management or other areas of IT. The digital function has really regressed since December 2020 & is not a good place to work.
