Meet some of our people

To give you a taste of what it's like to work here, we've asked a few of our colleagues to describe life at Spotify.

Ricardo Santos

Software Engineer

"Hi, I'm Ricardo and I'm a Software Engineer here at Spotify! Although naturally from Lisbon, Portugal's capital and biggest city, I grew up down south, in the smaller and sunnier town of Faro.

When I first came across Spotify, it amazed me the overall quality of the service, but more than anything else, how fast it would play any track I'd wish. The music lover in me loved the new service I had found and, the engineer in me loved to find that Spotify was hiring and furthermore, the technologies they used were appealing to me. I decided to apply.

Does "I love it!" sound too sketchy? Well seriously, most people here at Spotify are really passionate about what they do, that includes me.

As most engineers at Spotify, I get to participate in a lot of different projects. However, I spend most of the time with Team Content. We do funny stuff to music tracks and album metadata so that it all gets delivered nicely to you.

I'm not sure if I should include here that I can also frequently be seen skating around the office or shooting people with NERF guns..."

You just have, Ricardo.

"Well anyway, one can do a lot of things around here!"

John Brophy

Premium Campaign Manager

After studying Business Administration at Plymouth University, John spent seven years running the nightlife social network he co-founded - dontstayin.com. After selling the company, he knew exactly where he wanted to go next, Spotify.

John looks after all the campaigns that help convert users into our lovely Premium service.

"It's great to be part of such an amazing team. We're constantly growing and learning what makes our users tick. Everyone has a really entrepreneurial attitude towards work. There are no slackers in the office, everyone loves to be here. I'm really proud to be working on something that is redefining an industry."

John's most amazing experience at Spotify was when he was introduced to Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher. They had just popped in to see the office…as you do!

"My advice to people who want to work here? Watch the jobs page on Spotify.com like a hawk. Be proactive, follow us on twitter to get an idea of how we work / think. If you get an interview, be brilliant / confident and come in with ideas on how we can improve the service!"

What music do you like, John? "I like good music! I go from listening to the darkest techno from Berlin to classical tracks from Bach to rocking out to the Eagles of Death Metal. Have a listen!"

Sophia Bendz

Global Director of Marketing

Sophia grew up in Stockholm, Sweden, and studied the master program in economics at Stockholm University and Contemporary Art at Baruch College in New York.

Over to Sophe.

"I met Martin and Daniel in 2006 and got super excited about Spotify. So when they asked me to join the team and come and work for them, I didn't need to think for very long."

And what makes you smile about your job?

"I get to work with music and a product that helps people to enjoy music, regardless of time, place or platform. We make sure nothing comes between our users and their favourite music. That's such a beautiful thing and it's why I feel like what we do really matters.

My previous years working as a consultant have been beneficial to me, but what I believe is the most important thing - no matter what job you're at - is your drive and attitude. In a start-up it's crucial to be able to solve problems, embrace change, think in new patterns and enjoy it while doing so."

Words of wisdom for people interested in working here?

"Please keep visiting our Jobs pages. It's the only place we advertise jobs, so make sure you pop back regularly."

I worked at Spotify (Less than a year)

    Pros

Fully trusted and given reposnibility. Interesting and challenging tasks. I leaned a lot. Easy hours. Fun environment. Perfect office location in Stockholm.

    Cons

Spotify is not able to give you a full-time offer right after the internship. Depends on availability of positions when you are finishing school.
Most of the office is on vacation during July.

    Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Spotify in January 2019.

    Interview

First it was a recruiter phone call which lasted approximately 30 mins. Then a week later, a video interview was setup with two developers from Spotify. It lasted a bit over one hour.

Overall I liked the process. Everything, right from the recruiter’s call till the video interview were handled very well and all of them were very friendly. Video interview was more of a collaborative problem solving. Engineers who interviewed me know the stuff and very engaging. I was rejected but the feedback I received from the engineers were constructive and would help me prepare myself better.
