      Community Manager Interview

      1 Mar 2016
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Seattle, WA
      No offer
      Neutral experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Amazon (Seattle, WA) in Feb 2014

      Interview

I applied online (without any referrals) and got a call back two weeks later. The process lasted three to four weeks for me and included several phone interviews and a writing test before the in person interviews. The writing test was extensive and needed to be finished before the in person interview. Amazon does take care of you during the process (travel, expenses). They have a whole department that takes care of this! The actual interviews are quite challenging. I spoke with 6 different people during the in-person interviews (almost 45mins to an hour each) including a lunch interview. One thing I found interesting was that the interviewers barely make eye contact with you during the interview because they need to fill out a comprehensive STAR form with all your answers. At times, it felt like they were trying to trick you just to see how you'd react, especially when they'd bring someone in from a completely different department to test you. This style of interviewing can be exciting for some and I'm guessing that's how they weed out people that don't fit their culture. The entire interviewing process at Amazon seems like a machine. The recruiter I had been first speaking to had left her job mid-way through my process and another. Overall, it seems like employees are constantly having to interview candidates.

      Question 1

What would you change about the website? Tell me a time when you took on a role higher than yours. Tell me a time you failed at a project. Tell me a time when you led a project.

      Interview

It was very long, corporate (as expected), and difficult. A huge time investment (12+ hours) to receive zero feedback. That was 'company policy'. I think the process is designed to find people who suit that corporate environment, but I found that wasn't for me!

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 months. I interviewed at Amazon (San Diego, CA) in Jan 2021

      Interview

6 back to back interviews with various team members who wrote down every single word I said. Did not engage with me beyond stiff questions. Following the interviews, the recruiter sent an auto mail said I was not selected and did not respond when I asked for feedback.

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Amazon in Feb 2020

      Interview

It was not a pleasant experience. Some interviewers were extremely jaded or going by the books so much they forgot to be human. The star method is quite painful to apply and some interviewers really go by it step by step. There is no way you can be yourself. I would recommend building a completely new personality that would match with the star method so you can hope to please the interviewers
