      Sr. Manager, Product Management Interview

      9 Feb 2024
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Positive experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 months. I interviewed at Capital One in Feb 2024

      Interview

I had a mini case interview for 1 hour with a Senior Director of Product Management. There was also another person shadowing the interview. But overall it felt like a friendly conversation.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

The interview started with a brief introduction of my product management experience (kind of similar to tell me about yourself). I was asked to define what product management meant to me and why product management at Capital One. This took about 12-15 mins. The next 30 mins were focused on a case interview related to mobile shopping app. It felt like a typical case interview - two way discussion. I was asked what value the mobile app brings in. Then we dove into a specific functionality that is planned to be built out to increase the adoption. How would you do tradeoff with a different team. What are the technical build aspects you would consider while explaining the use case with the technical team. I cleared this round and waiting for my power day interviews.

      Interview

Applied online, HR call for 30 mins, Mini-case 1 hr., Power Day 4 hours. Until this, they trust your resume and move on without validating your financial/banking/payments skills. Skill interview on power day you can pick any product. Case interviews: If you are consultant, you can get these thru. Lots of calculations, assumptions. They prefer you do mental math. Time management is way important and if you think you solved the case, well there are at least 4-5 parts to it. Another problem is interviewer; they can just say the problem in 1 sentence and with low voice and ask you questions around it. how impatient they are, good luck with that! Some people genuine want to help you succeed while other just don't care, VP and above, don't care they don't want to get you in. Basically, you can manipulate your way in with good case tactics and storytelling. Don't assume you know banking/payments/finance more, doesn't matter.

      Sr. Manager, Product Management Interview

      9 May 2024

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Capital One (Chicago, IL) in May 2024

      Interview

I participated in an HR call, a Hiring Manager call, and a Mini Case Interview. The interactions with HR and the Hiring Manager were excellent. However, the Mini Case Interview left much to be desired. Admittedly, the interviewer lacked previous interviewing experience, which significantly impacted the professionalism of the session. The interviewer frequently used the term "suck" during our conversation, which was unexpected and unprofessional. When discussing recent highlights, the interviewer focused on an increase in workload brought about by the leadership team, which did not provide useful insight into the company’s achievements or culture. Additionally, I encountered issues with Capital One's scheduling system. It does not integrate well with personal calendars, leading to a misunderstanding about the time zone and causing me to miss the first case interview. Although it was my error, the system's limitations contributed to this mistake. Fortunately, I was informed that this would not impact my evaluation. In terms of feedback, after dedicating more than three hours to calls and over ten hours preparing for this process, the final communication was a generic email without any follow-up, which was disappointing. Overall, there needs to be extreme improvement in how Capital One conducts and organizes its interviews, especially in training new interviewers to ensure a professional and informative experience. ----- Update: In a follow-up with recruiting i learned that the Test Case Reviewer is not even who decisions the test case, it's someone in a blackbox that no one knows and no one can see the feedback on the test case. How is this an unbiased decision when someone who has no experience in face to face interaction with the candidate make a decision? This is absurd and biased.
