I applied through a recruiter. The process took 1 week. I interviewed at Edelman (Chicago, IL) in Jun 2012
Interview
Met recruiter at a career fair and kept in touch. When it was time to apply I did a phone screen. After the phone screen I was fairly quickly brought in for an in-person interview with the recruiter. I did not meet my potential team until I was hired. They have a lot of applicants, but if you have a smart-looking resume and can boast some prior experience related to PR before applying for the internship, you should be OK.
