      Content Strategist Interview

      7 Mar 2018
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Cambridge, MA
      Declined offer
      Positive experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at HubSpot (Cambridge, MA) in Feb 2018

      Interview

My interview process with HubSpot was outstanding. I felt completely prepared by the recruiter I was working with every step along the way. Before each interview, she let me know what to expect and gave me resources to help prepare accordingly. She consistently checked in with me about how I was feeling and gave me honest advice ("advice I would give to my friends") surrounding any concerns I might have had. It was obvious to me that HubSpot was extremely invested in their people, even ones they hadn't given an offer to yet! This immediately stood out to me, and was further confirmed after completing the in-person interviews. The first in-person round was with the team members I would be working with, and they all came extremely prepared with questions targeting specific skill sets (so, I was never really asked the same question twice, which was great!). The second round of interviews was with the VP of Marketing and the CMO -- two very busy people, and I was impressed they gave up time in their day for a junior level interview. When I mentioned this and thanked the CMO for taking the time, he said: "This is one of the most important parts of my job. Failing to hire good people is failing your team." This really made an impression on me and left me walking away feeling confident in the culture and values at HubSpot. Ultimately, I was offered the position. I accepted, and could not have been more excited to start working with the hiring manager I had developed a relationship with already. Upon telling my current company, though, I received a counter-offer I simply could not pass up. I immediately called the hiring manager, who was nothing but kind, understanding, and rational in response to my news. She said nothing to push me or make me feel guilty, and was extremely sympathetic to my situation. She probed to understand why and truly listened to my reasoning. She said she would never want to put me in a position where I felt regret for not taking the counter-offer, and that she truly wanted what I felt was best for me. After my conversation with the hiring manager, a recruiter followed up with me offering to talk through counter-offer situations, acknowledging that they are stressful and difficult. I had a final phone call with her, and she was similarly not pushy in any way. She truly listened to me, and I left both conversations feeling understood and treated unbelievably well. When I told the recruiter I had been dreading delivering the news for fear of a bridge burn or an angry situation, she simply responded "that's just not who we are". I cannot say enough about how impressed I was with HubSpot throughout this process.

While I'm sad to hear you won't be joining us, I'm over the moon that you had such a great experience and that our team focused on you as a human being above all else--that makes me really happy. I also love that our recruiter checked in with you during the peak of stress in this time, and that both the VP of marketing and the recruiter were so kind once you had made your decision. I hope you will stay in touch with us and hopefully join our team at some point in the future--you're clearly a kind and considerate person (in addition to being a great marketer)--we'd be lucky to have you here! -Katie

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at HubSpot (Dublin, Dublin)

      Interview

Phone call first was grand but tough, lovely interviewer. Sorta worked out during the interview that the job wasn't for me but I always like a challenge so when I got through to the next stage I did an assignment which they said they received. Never heard back which was quite rude! Always polite to send an email to say you didn't get through and thank you for trying. Not a very "hubspotty" thing to do.. Especially when you do an assignment. Kinda confirmed my suspicions about this place-great benefits but they don't really care about people at all.Just sales I imagine.
