      Learning Professional Interview

      1 Oct 2019
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Winter Springs, FL
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 1+ week. I interviewed at Humana (Winter Springs, FL) in Jan 2019

      Interview

The good: I was promptly contacted by a recruiter and given a very impressive overview of Humana that made me feel excited for the phone interview and made me eagerly research more about Humana and it was scheduled for the end of the following week. She told me the hiring manager was very “impressed” with my background. The hiring manager called me promptly at the scheduled time. I’m afraid this is where the good part ends. The bad: The hiring manager came across as borderline unprofessional from the moment the call started. While exchanging basic how are yous, I gave the typical friendly, I’m well answer while she proceeded to tell me it had been ‘one of those weeks’ like I’m a buddy at happy hour instead of a job candidate. She also made some off the cuff comments about Humana being behind and other managers that misdirect inquiries to her department. Several times she came across like she was almost warning me not to take the job rather than telling why I should. And what’s worse is that she tried to sell me on another opening they had while interviewing for this role (weird, weird, weird)! I was informed at the start of the call that the interview was behavioral, which is not what the recruiter told me (she had told me the HM would ask about my specific experience and align skills and find out what my goals are). Therefore, none of what I prepared for was asked. It was just all canned questions that weren’t tailored to my learning background. She didn’t ask any real follow up questions to dig deeper into my answers either, which showed a lack of interest on her part. This made the interview feel very stifled and not like a conversation. When I asked her questions, she just rambled and never really made a point, so I didn’t feel like I had anymore information about the job than what the recruiter told me. The ugly: I received a rejection note by the end of the day less than 1 business day later indicating to me that she already knew what she would do/who she would pursue given that the phone hadn’t even cooled off yet from the interview. She couldn’t have thought about it that thoroughly. It’s clear to me that she had her eye on someone internal for the role and this whole thing was a waste of my time, especially since I’m serious about finding another job. That would explain the bizarre, disinterested, and deflecting behavior on her part throughout the whole thing. As another prospective candidate noted, I wouldn’t apply for another Humana role based on this behavior either.
