      Cloud Software Engineer Interview

      23 Jun 2023
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Humana in Jun 2023

      Interview

Worst interview experience I've ever had. I applied for the company and didn't hear anything for a bit. About 2 weeks later, I get a text message out of the blue from a bot asking if I have "a few minutes for a pre-interview screening". I said sure, thinking it would be a few yes/no questions. It was a full on interview, with a bot, over text message. They asked me things like "describe such and such experience", "describe your experience with this technology". Full on essay questions, over text, that take time to answer and often require some human interaction for points of clarification/follow up with the interviewer. I was answering questions from 6pm until 9pm, when they stopped responding, then they texted me later the next day to continue. I was 100% not prepared for this, and there are so many things wrong with it. For one, who cold calls people for interviews? Set up a time, allow them to mentally prepare. In retrospect I should not have said yes to this text message when I did, but the message they sent did NOT convey what they were asking for, and there was no one on the other end for me to speak with to say "hey, can I actually finish this another time? I did not realize it would be such a time commitment". Once I started, I felt like I had to finish it or I would lose the opportunity, and I truly kept thinking each question would be the last. Furthermore, who interviews people with full on essay questions over text? They had also emailed me to complete online, but I didn't see the email unfortunately before I responded to the text, and again there was no one to ask whether I could switch from text to computer etc. (I also was not even within reach of a computer when I responded, as I did not know I would need to be). Even if I had done the interview over the computer, I still think it's bizarre to ask for lengthy personal responses behind a screen. Maybe if I were interviewing for a position as an author then my essay writing skills make sense, but this was a software engineering position. I actually think written communication is a strong suit of mine, but I just think it does both parties a complete disservice to cut off that ability to clarify or follow up (not to mention, this method of communication obviously did not inspire my best work). Interviewees - if you get this text, do not respond - do it over email, and make sure you have allotted plenty of time for a full-on interview and not just "a few minutes for a pre-screener". Humana - if this is something new you're trying out, my advice would be to ditch it altogether. It not only was a very inaccurate depiction of how I believe I would have performed given proper notice, but it also was very off-putting and impersonal, and made me not even want the job by the end of it.

Share a time and outcome where you had to research complaints and make necessary adjustments and/or recommendations to resolve complex software-related issues?
