      Senior Social Media Manager Interview

      31 Jan 2018
      Anonymous interview candidate
      San Francisco, CA
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Trulia (San Francisco, CA) in Jan 2018

      Interview

The interview process was quite quick. A friend had referred me to the hiring manager, and so I had an initial phone call with the hiring manager, then an hour long in-person interview with her. Then, I moved on to an in-person interview with 6 different members of the team. In total, the process took 3-4 weeks. The hiring manager asked me how I would approach developing a social strategy at Trulia along with three very specific questions. I spent a week and a half building a massive plan after much research, time, and consideration to address each of the three questions. In advance of the meeting, I shared a 40-page deck, and then I came to Trulia to interview with 6 different team members. After the interviews, I was not offered the job because I was a "great" strategic thinker, but they were concerned that I wouldn't be able to do the copywriting that was required of the job. In my humble opinion, if they are looking for a copywriter, then the onus was on the hiring manager to ask questions to get at copywriting - not these massive strategy questions that she posed to me. At the end of the day, it feels like they asked me a tall order, I delivered, they took my ideas and then didn't give an offer. It's probably best that they didn't, because I'm not sure that I'd want to work with people who would be so happy to take someone's work!

      Interview questions [3]

      Question 1

What might you imagine as the very first social experiments you’d want to run in service of growing audiences for the Trulia brand? Describe how you’d approach building a framework for experimentation, informed assumptions you’d make, and 2-3 channels you’d look to. Please share a handful of methods you’d use and metrics you’d be watching (and why).

      Question 2

The Trulia brand publishes posts that have the opportunity to take on a purposeful new life across social in service of our goals (beyond simply promoting a story). Choose one of the two concepts below and describe your ideal vision and a few ways you could imagine it playing out if you used it to create a social campaign. What would be the metrics you’d look to in order to track success? How would you use the concept to drive audience growth for Trulia via social? For the campaign, create at least 2-3 sample posts across different channels (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram) to illustrate your vision.

      Question 3

Please share a source of creative brand-building inspiration from another brand who you think has developed an especially winning social campaign idea. How has the brand deployed the campaign across channels, what do you see this campaign doing for the brand, and what inspiration would you draw from in thinking about efforts at Trulia?
