Pros

The job is fun and you get to learn a lot about ceramics. Most of my co-workers are enjoyable to work with and I enjoy working with them and the volunteers. My hours are pretty flexible too.

Cons

It's impossible to grow or be promoted unless you suck up to management and HR. Unfortunately they lead you in with their message of kindness, but it's very clique-oriented and they tend to bully individuals. HR is one person and is incredibly passive aggressive and so it is not like you feel comfortable or able to make a complaint without being scared of retaliation. Management doesn't seem to understand that a studio assistant has to perform like 5 different jobs in one roll for very little pay. I love my job and the mission, but it doesn't feel like the ones in charge really practice what they preach.

Pros

I LOVED working with the human aspect of Ben's Bells. It was an amazing experience getting to meet all these people and hear all their stories and see how kindness affected their lives. Everyone who worked in the studio was wonderful, and I learned so much.

Cons

Upper management sometimes loses sight of the goals of keeping kindness in the communities, and it usually seemed like we were selling kindness, especially around the major shopping holidays. Also they didn't seem to know how to spend money very well. Upper management was always kind to studio staff, but there were some pretty big misunderstandings.

Thank you for providing this insight into your time with the organization. We are happy to hear you enjoyed your work here and interacting with our wonderful community. We strive to highlight the importance of the tools for kindness sold in Shop KIND and that the income generated by the shop keeps our educational programming free to all participants. We will take your input into account and continue to prioritize communicating that information clearly to our staff and our supporters.

Pros

Customers and guests are kind. 90 minute paid lunches for those that are accepted into the clique. Overstaffing allows you to be on your phone watching movies all day when there are no managers around. managers love to work remotely and leave staff unsupervised for hours and even days at a time, so if you like to get paid for sitting around doing nothing, this is the perfect job for you.

Cons

Bullying, cliques, poor management, lack of leadership leads to suffering for those who aren't accepted and liked. if you are autistic or neurodivergent in any way, you will likely be abused and never given any opportunities, and you might even be fired. human resources, rather than focusing on helping staff, is focused instead on helping managers avoid difficult conversations with staff. managers, who are afraid to have an honest conversation with employees, go to the HR manager and complain to her. then, the employee is taken into the HR office (which is visible to everyone because of a big picture window facing the courtyard) to be reprimanded and corrected while the rest of the staff whispers to each other about what the employee did to "get in trouble." no training exists. employees are expected to simply know how to do their jobs, and receive correction when they make a mistake. this fosters a community of gossip, backstabbing and, frankly, hatred of anyone who is different. Ben's Bells advertises that they support diversity, equity and inclusion, but all leadership posts are filled with middle aged women. when an opportunity for advancement comes along (which is almost never) the post is given to someone's "friend" instead of offering genuine opportunities and development for people who work there. career development is non existent. not only do they not train their employees, but they also just allow everyone to underperform, leaving most of the workload in the hands of just a few hard workers, and slackers aren't told to pick up the pace. if you are a rock laying on the ground, making no sounds with no feelings and no humanity, this is the perfect job for you. All of this goes on out of view of the public. to the public, we are the "be kind" place, and we are so wonderful. if anyone starts to reveal the cracks, they are immediately eliminated. asking for protection from bullies will likely get you rejected from the clique and your only choice at that point is to leave. they will mob you until you leave. This organization is adored by the community. the cruelty and discrimination is hidden away--ruthlessly if necessary. the core group of middle aged women that have all the power at Ben's Bells are happy to just hobnob with wealthy donors and maintain the status quo. changemakers are not welcomed, even though change is desperately needed.
