Pros
• it’s a job that requires little communication. You do not need to worry about pleasing a specific person. • Opportunity for growth within the company • Paid vacation time • Additional paid time off (on top of vacation) • Unpaid time off (on top of vacation + PTO) • Mandatory/ Voluntary Overtime • Insurance benefits, including dental and 401K planning. • Pay increase every 6 months. • VTO (voluntary time off) opportunities are very common and frequent, depending on the department you are in. There are many times where you are half way through your shift, and a manager will ask if you’d like to voluntarily go home with no pay. Most times, however, they will post an entire shift for time off. You can accept or decline.
Cons
• Physically very demanding • On your feet all the time. • Shifts are long. You are not allowed to sit. You stand for 8 or 10 or even 12 hours, depending on the length of your shift. • If you are a people person, you will be very dissatisfied with the lack of communication with others. It can be a very lonely job at times. • Managers aren’t always the nicest, normally they will be civil but do not be surprised if they do not even know your name.
