Place for mediocre tech people - Senior Software Engineer Goldman Sachs Employee Review

Pros

Decent salary, well educated and eloquent people. Great place to work in IT if you have minimal or no tech skill, but you like to talk a lot about things that should be done instead of doing them.

Cons

Proprietary technology - no reusable skills. Long hours on the phone (as a software engineer) instead of development/design. Most of people never worked anywhere else - this is not because they are so good, but rather they wouldn't get a job anywhere else. Perfect GS strategy to keep employees.

Pros

The firm encourages and supports to change teams, which is helpful in expanding experience or moving away if you aren't happy with your team

Cons

The promotion has become very opaque lately. They hardly give out promotions, but make you slog and overwork the whole year in the name of it. Basically, you have worked 200% and made to look like a fool by the end of the year.
