Flawed leadership, but plenty of good people - Software Developer Iress Employee Review

Pros

The Sydney office has a relaxed and friendly feel, with plenty of smart and hard-working people. There's also a reasonable selection of perks - coffee machine, friday beers, etc.

Cons

The big difficulty at IRESS is senior management, who don't really give the impression that they know what to do to run a software development company. The middle managers, team leads and experienced line staff compensate well by doing what needs to be done, but there is a constant pressure of micro-management and under-resourcing and internal politics. Senior management will also talk the talk of "good leadership", but this feels hollow when it becomes clear how many of them deceive and intimidate their own staff, out of plain self-interest.

Thanks for the feedback. I am disappointed to hear of your perspectives. I do note that the consistent feedback we receive on our culture from a range of sources, including formal and informal feedback from current and former employees, is at odds with the points you have made here (Cons, Advice to Management).

Pros

People, Good central office (Melbourne) Staff benefits are ok

Cons

Engineering management is a let down - poor behaviours, micromanagement, lack of trust - the list can go on. Seems to get swept under the carpet or ignored so patterns continue to fester and have for years.
