Pros

- You have Glassdoor to warn you and I have posted this before I leave Gate One

Cons

- The company has gone downhill and most conversations are around people actively looking for roles elsewhere rather than long-term growth at the firm. - A substantial amount of talent left in a short period of time including several senior leaders, resulting in a loss of experience, continuity, and stability. - One very senior leadership departure occurred suddenly and was never addressed transparently, leading to widespread speculation internally and a loss of trust in the senior leadership team. - The firm has repeatedly failed to meet targets, resulting in no company bonus on multiple occasions. - There have been no pay rises for several years, including no adjustments to recent inflation, despite increasing expectations and responsibilities. - Colleagues are frequently charged out to clients at grades above their actual pay grade, yet promotion opportunities do not consistently reflect the level of responsibility or work being delivered. - The promotion process feels inconsistent and overly focused on business development and revenue generation, often at the expense of people development and fair progression. - Senior leadership appears heavily focused on business development and revenue generation, often at the expense of people development and fair progression. - Expectations around business development and "building the business" have increased significantly alongside already demanding client delivery workloads. - As a result, burnout is widespread, with a number of colleagues having been signed off work due to stress and pressure.

Pros

It used to be pay, bonus and pat leave. But pay has been frozen for 3-4 years, bonus payout was £0 and Pat level reduced by 3 months

Cons

Too many to count but put simply: Managing partner too focused on his personal brand than the company No strategy (other than to grow and be earning £xm by a certain year Culture of blame Clicky clubs, if your not part of one, your floating around and ignored No personal development No sales target is a myth, there is huge pressure on sales

Thank you for taking the time to share candid feedback. It’s disappointing to hear that aspects of your experience at Gate One haven’t matched the culture we want for our people. We take these themes seriously. It’s true that recent market conditions and a period of leadership transition have been challenging, and this has been reflected in feedback through Glassdoor and our annual engagement survey. We’re focused on clear communication of our new 3 year strategy, strengthening leadership visibility and expectations, refreshing our governance and decision making structures, and improving the consistency of the personal development experience, including clearer career pathways, more structured feedback and better alignment of objectives.

Gate One India Practise

Pros

Good work-life balance. The work is interesting and I have a high degree of autonomy, which is a refreshing change from Big 4 environments. The UK team is supportive and accessible. The approach to client work is flexible and tailored - there is no pressure to force-fit predefined solutions. The India team is small and close-knit, and since the practice is still evolving, there’s a real opportunity to shape the culture and the employee value proposition.

Cons

The structure is still being built, so there are some gaps that come with a smaller, growing team like a benefits structure. That said, there is openness to feedback and visible steps taken to make this happen

Thanks for your review for Gate One India. Great to hear your experience of the positive work‑life balance, high autonomy and the nature of our client work. Creating an environment where people have the space to shape their work is important to us. As a growing team in India, the opportunity to shape the culture and employee value proposition (EVP) is something we see as a real strength, and we’re glad that’s coming through in your experience. You’re right to point out that, as we scale, some of our structures, including benefits in the India market, are still evolving. We recognise the importance of trying to include parents on the health insurance policy and are working hard behind the scenes on this. Thank you again for sharing your perspective.

Pros

Good people, with lots of growth potential - especially in the United States. Very manageable work-life balance, and opportunities to shape your own career trajectory. Motivated people can have huge impact.

Cons

Senior leadership are adjusting slowly to the pressures of international expansion. Company is still maturing in terms of internal processes, which lands on mid-level management.

Pros

- The only real “pros” are the memories of what this company used to be — a genuinely great culture, fun and regular socials, respected and inspiring leaders, and interesting, meaningful work. - Unfortunately, none of this exists anymore.

Cons

- Most of the best people left, and in many cases have been replaced with weaker capability. - Expectations have increased significantly across all grades, making progression and promotion far harder to achieve. - There is constant pressure to bring in work, with a heavy emphasis on business development and building the business on top of demanding client delivery - it’s like doing three jobs at once. - There are no longer any company-wide socials or fun incentives. - There have been no pay increases for years, including no proper inflation adjustments. - Employees are being encouraged to post positive Glassdoor reviews to counterbalance the negative ones, which does not feel like an honest reflection of how people are actually feeling. - People do not feel valued, morale is at an all time low, and most people are actively looking to leave. - The overall atmosphere in the office is flat and demoralising, the energy has gone and feels more like a funeral than a workplace.

This was a really hard review to read and digest but thank you for your honesty. It’s very sad to see that you think all of the good things at Gate One no longer exist. Hopefully there’s at least one SLT member you trust to speak to directly to get things off your chest more directly, you can also use the anonymous 360 feedback. It would be very helpful to get your opinion on the things we’ll be reviewing as part of the EVP Evolution initiative - especially relating to the things you mention: Workload and expectations, recognition and pay, socials and morale – please share with your employee engagement rep. Finally, please be reassured that there isn’t a leadership strategy asking people to write positive Glassdoor reviews, perhaps those who aren’t feeling as negative want to show a bit of balance.

Unrecognisable as a business now

Pros

*A legacy of a rollercoaster growth story over the first 10years, a model set up to enable consultants to develop & progress in a fresh, transparent culture *For many years, high quality consultants grew the business, shaped the culture & had their voice heard

Cons

*Times have changed, the business stopped growing a few years ago, recent downsizing in the UK *It’s slowly but surely morphing into another big 4 model, it feels like any other medium sized corporate *There are very few Partners or CDs the team love working with, the values promoted are often not a lived day to day experience *There is not a feedback culture with less trust in relationships than there was, yet the success of the new performance management framework relies on this *Low growth has impacted the L&D model at leadership level; there is now a desire to slow down/reduce promotions, pay-out less bonus & make excellence harder to achieve *Culture used to be the number 1 reason people decided to join Gate One, it was special & different. The team were highly engaged & went above & beyond. Sadly, that culture is now unrecognisable from what is was with many people saying they feel disillusioned. A lot of experienced seniors have left in the last 18mths seeking better growth opportunities with higher reward and/or inhouse roles with no BD pressures *Leadership over the last 2y+yrs has been more hands off & feels passive, there is aspiration but lack of cohesive, practical application, ultimately resulting in negative year on year growth & the first UK redundancies in mid ‘25 *The supporting functions have far fewer development/promotion opportunities & small bonus potential

While the early days of Gate One hold a very special place in our story, they weren’t without their own challenges and we believe the opportunity ahead lies in building something even better together on strong foundations. We understand that recent changes have been difficult – we’ve transitioned from a founder-led model, we had some great colleagues leave the business (but some great new colleagues have joined) and we’ve had to make some difficult decisions to protect the future of the company due to market conditions. Undoubtedly these changes have had an impact, and we recognise that this has led to feelings of disillusionment for some people – especially those who have been part of Gate One for longer. Your feedback is really important and valued, especially what you observe on leadership visibility, trust and feedback. We know that rebuilding after significant change requires consistent action, open dialogue, and a renewed commitment to our people and evolving culture. We’re actively working to strengthen our feedback culture via the Meaningful Performance project, support career development across all functions, and ensure our refreshed performance management processes are fair and transparent – we’d love your input and support on this so do reach out in whatever way you feel most comfortable. We are listening and learning from feedback like yours to shape a better future for Gate One.

Pros

Honestly, if you aren't bothered about career development or climbing up the ladder this could be a great place for you. The office is lovely with good food options in the canteen, amazing location in coal drops yard near KX station with plenty of options for restaurants, shops, coffee places and the canal on your doorstep. People are generally friendly and overall I experienced slightly less politics and toxic behaviours compared with larger firms I've worked for, however this was still present in some areas. The annual Gateaway trips away had mixed feedback but I personally found them to be fun and engaging and a great opportunity to connect with colleagues you wouldn't usually work with.

Cons

You'll be able to see the same feedback from other reviews but career development is not prioritised at all at Gate One, it is unfortunately true that they will only focus on rewarding individuals that bring in money otherwise you are invisible to them. I watched many people get turned down when it came to promotions who scored the highest ratings in client delivery because they didn't bring in new work and this seemed to be the only metric Gate One care about. This led to stagnation in salaries because there are no pay rises within grades which is unfair considering how hard people are expected to work and how much inflation continues to rise. There is so much pressure to sell work regardless of what grade you are in. Most of the best talent has left already and talented people continue to do so because they are not being promoted fairly. There are some very questionable leaders left who are not respected within the firm. Unfortunately I do regret making the move to Gate One and wish I had stayed at the larger firm I came from.

Thank you for your feedback. It’s great to see the balance in your review and what your enjoy and where you think improvements need to be made. Great to see you like our London office building and the location, the people you work with and events like the Annual Gateaway. We also take seriously the concerns you’ve raised around career development, progression and how performance is recognised. These are themes we have been hearing across a number of feedback channels, including our recent Pulse survey and wider employee listening, and they are a key focus for us as a leadership team. In particular, we recognise the perception that progression can feel too heavily weighted towards business development. During challenging market conditions there needs to be a sharper focus on BD in order to remain a sustainable business but we want to be clear that progression is intended to reflect a combination and balance between the three pillars of performance at Gate One: Client advisory/delivery, BD and wider internal contribution, however, we acknowledge that where this does not feel balanced in practice, it can understandably lead to frustration. To address this, we have been taking steps to: • Improve clarity and transparency around progression, including clearer definitions of what is expected at each grade and how different elements of performance are assessed • Strengthen fairness and consistency in promotion decisions, with better preparation, alignment and guidance for promotion panels • Review how we recognise and reward contribution, including ensuring that different types of impact (not just sales) are visible and valued Thank you again for your honest feedback and your advice to management. We fully agree on the importance of fair progression, meaningful development and recognising contribution beyond business development. We remain committed to listening, taking action and being transparent on our progress.
