Celebrating Pride month is part of our commitment to create a great place to work where colleagues can be their true self at work and have the opportunities to succeed, no matter their background. Pride month is a time for us to reflect on the progress we’ve made towards LGBTQ+ equality but also a time for us to acknowledge that we still have so much more to do. Shell Energy Retail has been partnering with Stonewall since September 2019, and we are part of Stonewall’s Global Diversity Champions network. Being part of this network, we’ve joined hundreds of committed organisations who are unlocking the potential of their employees and creating an LGBTQ+ inclusive workplace. Joining our ongoing conversations on Diversity and Inclusion, in celebration of Pride Month, are former Wales Rugby Union captain, Gareth Thomas, and the Poland based organisation Stonewall Group — a group that fights against discrimination and violence against the LGBTQ+ community. Our Shell Energy Retail values were developed by colleagues across the business. Demonstrating every day that We Care, We Embrace Differences, We Evolve and We Deliver, we each take a collective step towards a better energy future. We appreciated everyone’s contribution during our Happy Heads campaign for Mental Health Week last week. We will continue to bring We Care to life through the volunteered stories of our 27-strong Wellbeing Champion Network, the 24/7 employee assistance line and the tools in our Wellbeing Centre. “We Care reminds colleagues they are not alone and we can help. I really hope we can be there for our colleagues when they need us most. This year’s theme for International Women's Day is #choosetochallenge which continues to encourage everyone to identify, celebrate and increase visibility of women's achievements to help forge equality. We’ve committed to not only being a great place to work, but to build an organisation that truly represents the make-up of our customers, communities and colleagues at all levels - in order to become one of the most diverse and inclusive employers. Lockdown is a challenging time for business, but it’s even tougher for the charity sector. Earlier in the year Mind UK was selected by our UK colleagues as Shell Energy's charity of the year. With lockdown and remote working, we’ve had to rethink our fundraising activities, but we haven’t let that stop us. Last week our People team held a “virtual” fundraising day with activities ranging from races, fancy dress, hair dyeing and a pub quiz, to a culmination in an ice bucket challenge. It’s more important than ever to support the vital work of this national mental health charity. Mind UK campaign to improve services, raise awareness and promote understanding of mental health problems, and how they can affect our day to day lives. To celebrate National Apprenticeship Week we caught up with a colleague, Tej Heer, to get his thoughts: “When I joined the company in July 2017, I decided to start at the bottom and work my way up. Within my first 6 months I enrolled onto the apprenticeship 'Customer Service Level 2'. The support and encouragement given by my manager enabled me to graduate with a Distinction, which I was delighted with. This allowed me to progress to a Team Manager position, achieved in half the time I had set myself, (9 months). In 2019 I then applied for, and was accepted on to the 'Team Manager and Supervisor Level 3’ apprenticeship. Shell Energy have given me every opportunity to develop myself and enhance my skill-set, and they continue to provide all the support I need. Our own Shell Energy Data and Insights Lead Business Analyst, Liberty Stacey, was one of 2,000 young leaders and influencers attending the 2019 One Young World summit, recently hosted in London. Over four transformative days, influential leaders and speakers discussed important topics such as poverty, diversity, inclusion, energy transition and climate change. When we caught up with her, Liberty was buzzing with enthusiasm about her experiences: “One of the biggest benefits of attending a youth leadership summit like this is being able to meet and talk to people from across the globe,” Liberty said. “Many of the topics discussed were highly relevant to Shell Energy Retail and our mission to guide customers to a better energy future. That diversity of thought and experience across a large group of ambitious young people means collectively we become a powerful force for social change.” Over the next few weeks, Liberty and colleagues from Shell will begin taking part in working groups to form action plans and share findings from the event with colleagues across the business.
