    Lockdown is a challenging time for business, but it’s even tougher for the charity sector. Earlier in the year Mind UK was selected by our UK colleagues as Shell Energy's charity of the year. With lockdown and remote working, we’ve had to rethink our fundraising activities, but we haven’t let that stop us. Last week our People team held a “virtual” fundraising day with activities ranging from races, fancy dress, hair dyeing and a pub quiz, to a culmination in an ice bucket challenge. It’s more important than ever to support the vital work of this national mental health charity. Mind UK campaign to improve services, raise awareness and promote understanding of mental health problems, and how they can affect our day to day lives. We’re proud that, even in lockdown, we’ve been able to make a contribution towards such a fantastic cause. #charity #community #makingadifference #MindUK

  • To celebrate National Apprenticeship Week we caught up with a colleague, Tej Heer, to get his thoughts: “When I joined the company in July 2017, I decided to start at the bottom and work my way up. Within my first 6 months I enrolled onto the apprenticeship 'Customer Service Level 2'. The support and encouragement given by my manager enabled me to graduate with a Distinction, which I was delighted with. This allowed me to progress to a Team Manager position, achieved in half the time I had set myself, (9 months). In 2019 I then applied for, and was accepted on to the 'Team Manager and Supervisor Level 3’ apprenticeship. Shell Energy have given me every opportunity to develop myself and enhance my skill-set, and they continue to provide all the support I need.   • Our own Shell Energy Data and Insights Lead Business Analyst, Liberty Stacey, was one of 2,000 young leaders and influencers attending the 2019 One Young World summit, recently hosted in London. Over four transformative days, influential leaders and speakers discussed important topics such as poverty, diversity, inclusion, energy transition and climate change. When we caught up with her, Liberty was buzzing with enthusiasm about her experiences: “One of the biggest benefits of attending a youth leadership summit like this is being able to meet and talk to people from across the globe,” Liberty said. “Many of the topics discussed were highly relevant to Shell Energy Retail and our mission to guide customers to a better energy future. That diversity of thought and experience across a large group of ambitious young people means collectively we become a powerful force for social change.” Over the next few weeks, Liberty and colleagues from Shell will begin taking part in working groups to form action plans and share findings from the event with colleagues across the business.

  • Language and gender: what does it mean to us in the workplace and beyond? If this is a subject that interests you, why not join us at our next Tech meet-up? We’ll be discussing the impact that gendered language has on our behaviour in the workplace. Are there such things as 'male' and 'female' words? How does our use of particular words alienate some? Why do some job adverts never attract CVs from certain demographic groups? Why does language used in a meeting room hold meaning for some and not others?
