What is the hiring process like at Yelp?

      Yelp reviews

Motivating incentives - deranged culture and hiring decisions

      Elite account director

      Pros

Remote, Good sales bonuses and decent products with easy sales following the script.

      Cons

Yelp hires people far too many people who are unwilling to perform because their hiring process prioritizes people who have diverse backgrounds and lifestyles. Out of ten new hires, 2 will do the job and stay and one of them will be successful.

      difficult, be wary

      Business outlook

      Pros

-If you can learn to sell at Yelp you can probably be successful anywhere -You'll probably meet some cool coworkers and make friends -Hiring managers at other companies know that Yelp is a grind so having Yelp on your resume will open doors for you in your future career

      Cons

-This job is very hard. High pressure, terrible product, calling people that have said no hundreds of times before. If you don't have a thick skin, you will develop one. -Don't let the crazy managers make you feel bad about yourself. Some managers are good but many are bad, and sales directors are completely out of touch. My advice is do your best, make your dials, don't take anything personally, and DISCONNECT from work when you're not working. -DO NOT stay longer than 2 years. Pivot from Yelp into an actual tech company and start building your career. Staying long at Yelp is a waste of time because tech companies don't even consider Yelp to be real sales.

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback and perspective from your years at Yelp. We’re glad to hear you valued the sales skills and resilience you built here, as well as the connections you made with your coworkers. We recognize that sales at Yelp can be a tough, high-pressure environment, and that cold calling is especially challenging, no matter where you do it. At Yelp, our management style is intentionally hands-on to provide as much support and coaching as possible, but we know this may not work for everyone. We encourage healthy work-life balance and want all employees to feel confident in disconnecting and taking care of themselves outside of work hours. Thank you again for your candid input and contributions during your time with us. We wish you continued success in your sales career and beyond.

      Great training but stops there

      Customer success manager

      Business outlook

      Pros

You will get the best training ever and many of the managers are cool. The interview process is fairly easy and it's fairly easy to get hired. It's fully remote with good benefits. Cool culture.

      Cons

So many customers hate the product. Be prepared to get hammered with current customers that are mad because they were either "lied to" by an account executive about how the service works, or not getting jobs from their listing and are pissed they spent money or wanting bad reviews taken down and cussing you out or threatening to cancel service because you can't take down their negative review or getting billed when they weren't expecting a bill and etc. I'm just saying...you will get cussed out...be prepared. This role is a glorified call center job but If you can make it long enough to promote into another role that takes you off the phones, you'll probably enjoy working there.

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We're glad you appreciated the training, remote work, and benefits — it's important to us that employees feel supported from the start. We understand your concerns about the challenges faced in the Customer Success Manager role, especially when handling upset customers or difficult conversations about product expectations, billing, and reviews. Your input is valuable and will be shared with leadership. Thank you for your contributions, and we wish you the best in your next chapter.

The interview process was smooth. Quarterly goodie boxes sent to your home.

      Cons

Territories got shifted and manipulated. Customer requests to be taken off Yelp's list was not followed and most of the day you get yelled at because they have opted out of calls and we continue to call.

Thank you for your feedback. In recent years, we've made changes to overhaul our territories. Our territories are randomly assigned, and pools are swapped between folks every few months in order to ensure that all of our AEs are given fair opportunities for success. These changes are designed to give each person a more balanced group of accounts and move away from a traditional "patch" of contiguous zip codes. All told, these improvements are creating a much more equitable and modern territory assignment system for our sales force. We appreciate your input and contributions to the Yelp team. If you’d like to share more details about your experience, please email us at employeefeedback@yelp.com.

      Cons

Tenured executives are given less opportunity and less reason to commit because they make the job so difficult and hire so many unqualified, underpaid new hires who are bullied by new management. Managers are micromanaging and micromanaged even though the company makes more money than ever without the overhead of offices

Thank you for your feedback, however, we are sorry to hear that your experience on our team has been anything less than what you had hoped for, especially when it comes to the growth opportunities available. Our Account Executives are set up for success with the Yelp Sales Development Program, a transparent path for professional growth that outlines what you need to be doing every day, month, and quarter to reach the next level in our sales organization. As you progress through YSDP, you will be eligible for increases in compensation, title, and responsibilities, which will keep your career moving in the right direction. We're thankful for your input. We'll keep listening to the concerns and needs of our employees so we can support them as best we can.

      Cons

My manager was new and could not answer any of my time sensitive technical questions in a timely manager because she had to go to her higher up for the answer which cost me sales. Cold calls all day getting hung up on by receptionists trying to get to the business owner.

      Cons

Let’s start by saying the salary is low. Even for selling veterans. The amount of pressure out into you for a cold calling job is insane. The titles they put in their hiring ads is off. When someone sees an ad that says “inside sales” it’s easy for anyone who has sales experience to assume that they would be working with warm leads. But EVERYTHING is cold calling. It’s easy to be stressed out constantly about the numbers. Extremely micromanaged Trainings are all rushed KPIs are stressed so much that it has causes stress

Thank you for sharing your feedback with us. We understand that the Account Executive role can be challenging. During our interview process, we go to great lengths to set expectations about what can be expected in the role and what the day-to-day looks like for an Account Executive. We want to make sure that everyone who comes onboard has a solid understanding of the highs and lows a career in sales can bring. In addition, our management style at Yelp is very hands-on, and to some this may feel like micro-management. Our goal is to give ample support for our sales team while they learn new sales skills and practice new tactics. This sometimes includes things like barging calls to assist with closing deals or managers having team check-ins multiple times per day to ensure everyone is on-track to achieve their goals. We know this approach is not for everyone, but we've created a successful and supportive environment through this strategy. We know that sales may not be the path for everyone, but we're thankful for your efforts and contributions. We wish you the best of luck in your next role!

      Not supportive, no autonomy...

      Former employee

      CEO approval
      Business outlook

      Pros

The product itself is good, it's affordable, and there's no long term contract necessarily.

      Cons

Training just teaches you about the product, it doesn't necessarily teach you how to pitch it. There's not a structured pitch. I came from never having worked with restaurants and I felt very unprepared. I printed out the decks of training to have as reference. I asked countless times to listen in on cold calling, to hear how people were approaching their cold calls - it never happened. I was told 'it could' but, never did. I asked countless times to get a hold of calls from a rep who was doing very, very well... it never happened. Ultimately, my departure (their choice) was due to periods of inactivity. I came from a job that had lots of autonomy... and didn't require check ins. Here, if there was more than 20 minutes of no calls or emails, 'I'll assume you're not working.' Going through lists of restaurants and searching their websites, Google, and Yelp pages to learn about them, and see if it was a good fit, followed by doing that handfuls of times - and many times they were not a fit back to back to back... it takes time. I realized that I'd not be there long when on a Thursday I got written up for not being heard from for 2-3 hours after a doctor appointment, when I'd been sent elsewhere for further testing and my phone had died. I take accountability for that... The following day, I started my day at 8:30am, was doing something in my emails, and was 3 minutes late to the 9am team meeting. Later in the day I found out that the manager had called HR because I was 3 minutes late and 'she thought I wasn't coming to work that day.' That was my 'final warning.' It was quite clear that she was working me out. It wasn't surprising, I didn't feel as though this manager liked me in the interview process, and I felt as though they made her also hire me to give me a shot... and I probably should have taken that as a sign. When you read receives about Yelp being strict on their hours, and time... believe it. There is no autonomy... you will get an offer letter that is SALARY, but you are actually hourly, and you will need to use sick or PTO for a doctors appointment...

      Business outlook

      Pros

Good benefits package and solid first step into sales for people without experience. Remote is also a pro.

      Cons

Working as an Account Executive at Yelp has been nothing short of a nightmare. The quality of leads provided is abysmal, often consisting of businesses that have no interest in or need for Yelp's services. Management is unresponsive to any feedback, brushing off legitimate concerns about the product and sales process. The administration refuses to acknowledge the glaring downsides of Yelp, choosing instead to push a narrative that simply doesn’t reflect reality. The compensation system is designed to favor only the top earners, leaving the majority underpaid despite putting in the same grueling hours. Success heavily depends on the territory you’re assigned, which is completely out of your control. If you’re unlucky, you’ll find yourself struggling to meet unrealistic quotas. The turnover rate is astronomical, with many talented individuals leaving due to burnout and dissatisfaction. If you're considering a sales career, steer clear of Yelp.
