I applied online. The process took 4 months. I interviewed at Charles River Associates (New York, NY) in Oct 2017
Interview
- Phone Interview with recruiter (2-3 weeks after applying) - great discussion, nothing out of the ordinary.
- Online aptitude test (1 week after recruiter call) - easy enough, nothing out of the ordinary. finished all questions and believe I performed fairly well.
- Phone/case interview with consultant (1-2 weeks after aptitude test) - liked the conversation with the consultant. The case was fairly straightforward - pharma company is considering acquiring-developing a drug for a specific indication. what are some of the things, you should think about when choosing the drug and target market. There was also interpretive discussion of bar graphs related to disease severity, etc.
-Hiring for position went on hold for 2 months. recruiter remained in contact throughout this time.
-In-person interview (behavioral/case interviews + presentation) - This is where logistics/communications became a bit disorganized. I initially received an e-mail asking to provide a few dates to interview in San Francisco. I submitted my available dates and don't hear back for a week. I followed-up to confirm whether any date had been set and received a response that the interview had been set for that week and in a different city (without explanation). Due to another meeting being scheduled in the time it took them to get back to me, I had to reschedule. I received the interview schedule about a week prior to the interview. The interview included a presentation, but there were no instructions on what to present during this time. I asked and never received a response back.
I thought the interview went fairly well with the exception of one of interviewers aggressively asking me why I wanted to become a consultant. I mentioned that I was interested in working with pharma companies to understand key issues and help think through actionable solutions. His response was that I could go work for a pharma company, if I wanted to do that. When the time came for me to ask him questions, I asked him why he chose to go into consulting. His response was that he thought consulting as it relates to pharma pricing was black magic and he wanted to do black magic. Other than that interview, I thought the others went very well.
I received an email 2 weeks later, stating that there were better suited candidates for the position. I was a bit surprised because I believe I had more education/experience than their current employees. I did notice that among the 50 or so employees that were in the office, they didn't have any African American employees. Perhaps, this was a case of hiring discrimination, but very difficult to ever prove.
one hour included 30 min fit interview and 30 min case study. Questions: a) describe a research study you've done; b) which monopoly cases do you find interesting c) how do you estimate monopoly/oligipoly econometrically
