      Head of Design Studio Interview

      13 Dec 2017
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Stockholm, Stockholm
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 months. I interviewed at IBM (Stockholm, Stockholm) in Oct 2017

      Interview

Pretty disorganized. The point of contact was a consultant who didn't have a lot of information. First interview was in person, but the interviewer spent the first 40 minutes of our 1hr interview talking about himself. They were doing multiple interviews that day so there was a couple of us all sitting in the waiting area at the same time. There was no coffee, no wifi, and not even a bathroom for waiting guests. Pretty unfriendly. Second interview was a month later. Panel interview and the first time I was meeting the actual hiring manager (who had to leave after 15 minutes). We discussed process, past projects, etc. The panel was not at all prepared and had not even looked at my CV, opting to pull up my LinkedIn profile for the first time while I was sitting there. My sense is they are looking for more of an advertising background and was overly focused on visual presentation. Two weeks later I received feedback that they wanted someone with a stronger design background. Considering I have greater depth of experience at high end design consultancies, Fortune 500 projects, and education in design, won awards, etc. than the interviewer, I found this feedback very puzzling. Despite all the hype around IBM design, I was very unimpressed. They're just looking for people to "make it pretty" and put lipstick on the pig. They don't really embrace design thinking.

      Question 1

The interviewer had me pull up a website and "tell me what you see" on the fly.
