      Executive Team Leader Interview

      15 Jan 2013
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Miami, FL
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Target (Miami, FL)

      Interview

I began the process by applying online for an ETL in Training for the South Florida region. About a month after applying, I finally received an email from a recruiter asking to set up a phone interview, and to take several assessments online (logic, personality tests, etc.) The interview over the phone was pretty easy and standard. He asked me basic things like my education, work experience, as well as some general interview-type questions- mainly focused on leadership and my experience as a leader. After we finished, he told me I would hear back in a few days for the next step. Two days later, I received a voice mail from a store manager in my area wanting to discuss "potential opportunities" with me; I should have known right there that something was up. We set up a time for an interview and I drove all the way across town to get there. After waiting for about 10 minutes past my scheduled time, I was finally greeted by a nice ETL who was about my age. We had good small talk and I was really liking the general vibe I was getting. He walked me to the store manager's office (or store team lead as they call it) and we started the interview -the three of us. Right off the bat she asked me what my salary expectations were, which I though was odd. I told her upper $40s as I had done my research and knew that was the common starting salary for an ETL. She then began to tell me that they currently did not have any open ETL positions and that they actually had a number of team leaders waiting to become executive team leads...basically that there was no chance of me getting an ETL position even if one opened up. Continuing, she began to explain that they had an opening for a TEAM LEADER, which is an hourly position (when I later asked how much it paid, she couldn't give me an answer). At this point I was EXTREMELY annoyed that they drug me across town under false pretenses when they knew there were no ETL positions available. Anyway, she asked me if I would be interested and I said "it's not what I wanted, but I might consider it." We commenced a brief interview with the standard "tell me about a time when..." questions, then I went with an ETL to discuss the job a little more thoroughly. He asked a few questions, explained the position and whatnot then I left. A week or so later I got an email from the HR ETL at the store that they were not able to offer me any positions. It is my assumption that I did not get the position (that I didn't want anyway) because I was visibly angry with them, and did not act enthusiastic about the interview, after they essentially lied and insulted me by interviewing me for a position that only requires a GED. It was a complete waste of time.

Standard STAR "tell me about a time when..." questions. Nothing out of the ordinary.

I applied through university. I interviewed at Target (Charlotte, NC)

      Interview

It was a two step interview process. Personable and you are able to interview with not only your direct managers but theirs as well. Provides transparency into your new team. My interview was virtual because I was moving to the area, but I'm sure they do in person for local folks.

Star format- they want a story for each accomplishment they inquire about.
