Pros
The people are the biggest advantage for IBM. Everyone was extremely willing to take time out of their day to speak with me for 30 minutes. I was extremely surprised how open people in higher positions were to offer career advice. For example, I gave a presentation that my manager shared with his team and I received a message from his boss asking to speak with me about my presentation because he was so impressed. For such a big company, I was surprised that higher managers even paid attention to the work of interns.
Cons
I was assigned to a team of people who were all in different offices and none of them did the job I was hired to do. As a result, I wasn't able to get any exposure to the job I was hoping to learn about. Sure, my manager was still really nice and I learned about what it he did but I already knew that wasn't what I wanted to do for a career. It simply confirmed what I already knew. This assignment mismatch definitely affected my internship experience and my overall perception of the company. My manager also didn't seem to know what to do with me most of the time. This seemed to be a common theme with the other interns at my location. Many of us spent most of the internship sitting around with no work to do.
