I have been working at NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Cafeteria
    Campus Events
    Opportunity for telecommute
    Benefits of CalTech
Work with some really brilliant minds

    Cons

This place will keep you busy. The environment is heavily outdated.
There is no time left to work on upgrades or new technology as you are too busy keeping the lights on and trying to explain the unexplainable.

Parking isn't sufficient for the amount of people who work there and the metro never has enough room for the sheer amount of people coming or going.

    Advice to Management

Focus more on your people and less on the current IT BUZZ word. Work more on upgrading from legacy to devops and especially on job specific roles instead of JACK of ALL TRADES

I worked at NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Amazing missions, incredibly intelligent and dedicated workforce, strong ties to Caltech, highly capable executive leadership team and lab director.

    Cons

The only con worth mentioning is the parking situation. Old news and difficult to resolve given that JPL is landlocked in terms of space.

    Advice to Management

Invest in developing more diversity across all levels of leadership at the lab.

I worked at NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great to work with talented individuals who are building some bleeding edge technologies. Seeing space robots on campus is pretty amazing.

    Cons

It's government, so there is a significant amount of red tape and established policies and procedures, that take forever to evolve with the times. Those who are hungry and constantly seek growth, will find that growth opportunity is slow.

    Advice to Management

Incumbents and lifers need to be open minded about fresh ideas and approaches and can't be territorial if they want a new generation to work there. Either fire those who provide no value to the team or organization or find a new role that can capitalize on their strengths. Train those in senior positions to provide mentorship and guidance instead of allowing them to be territorial to those who try to provide value.

I worked at NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory full-time

    Pros

Great coworkers, great time off and retirement benefits, have to pay in to the health insurance, but it's worth it. Prestige in working at JPL.

    Cons

Horribly outdated systems, nothing is centralized and there's no real reason for it. It's like working in the 1990's, but worse. Some of the egos were ridiculous. Depending on who you work for, your manager can be really supportive or throw you under the bus. Largely overall, the leadership does not seem to care about the employees.

    Pros

    Smartest people
Tons of work to keep you busy

    Cons

Slow Pace of Work on Large Projects
    Too many meetings
    Lack of Diversity
    Powerpoint Engineering
    Unwillingness to take risk

    Advice to Management

Your smartest and best engineers are leaving to tech companies! Pay them accordingly and give them the opportunity to actually engineer and not be tied down by mountains of paperwork.

I have been working at NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory full-time

    Pros

Great Work environment, super competent coworkers, great work life balance

    Cons

Advancement can be slow because worker turnover is relatively low, you don't always have a ton of say on what types of work or projects you get to work on
