Pros

I love working in places where I can get involved in challenging, impactful work that makes a tangible difference and that has certainly been the case here. Upon joining UMe, I knew the business was going through a transformation but it has been so rewarding to see how much value I can bring to the organisation. My expertise has been acknowledged and my opinions have been heard. It's not all smooth sailing, no transformation is, but we have a mission and it's a very collaborative environment in which I also have autonomy to apply myself. Working in a fast-paced, challenging setting isn't for everyone, especially if it wasn't like that before, but the people I have worked with so far here are passionate about what they do and their teams.

Cons

The flexible, hybrid working model is great for work-life balance but means you don't see as many people in the office and I haven't made as many friends although everyone I have met have been lovely. As a new joiner, it would be nice to meet more colleagues, especially from other teams.

Pros

It's early days here at UnderwriteMe but I can see the potential the company has. We're going through a much needed business transformation period that shifts our focus from one that could be considered haphazard to a direction that is measured, clear, easy to comprehend, and actually quite self-aware which I personally appreciate a lot. The people are great, supportive and the on boarding really makes you feel connected. I actually look forward to starting my working day!

Cons

Transformations and changes in direction are difficult for some, that's unfortunately the nature of the beast, but I believe the company is going in the right direction and more importantly doing it in the right way.

Poor Leadership

Pros

Lots of the day-to-day Individual Contributors are smart, collaborative and personable people Compensation is pretty reasonable Good IT equipment (most use Mac's)

Cons

TLDR; I wouldn't recommend anyone I care about working here. Declining culture. This has steadily declined over the last 12 months or so. It's become the sort of place that makes people come into the office because it's an arbitrary day of the week, despite some people being initially recruited on a remote-first basis. That's further compounded by the office being too small for everyone, so people travel into the office to be on video calls with remote people. Genius. Poor leadership pursued an approach that recently led to many redundancies across product and tech. Good people undoubtedly hurt. There's also a lack of alignment and collaboration across leadership. Some of the leaders don't pursue open communication and collaboration, instead preferring to 'politically manoeuvre' as someone else so eloquently put it. I've personally witnessed undermining comments and conflicting strategies. If you are familiar with the term HiPPO, then you should expect that amongst some parts of the leadership. Just make sure you agree with everything a particular key individual suggests and you'll be fine. Strategically I think they have a challenge too. The two largest insurers in the UK aren't on the platform (public information). If they can't get them onto the platform, how long will users remain? Competitors who offer whole-of-market could relatively easily eat into their market share if they develop a compelling alternative.

Thank you very much for taking the time to provide your feedback. It is great to hear that you enjoy the colleagues that you work with, and are satisfied with your compensation & IT equipment. It is disappointing to hear that you feel the culture of UMe has declined over the last 12 months. We did make changes to the structure of our business during the 4th quarter of 2023. These changes were vital in order to ensure that we continue our journey to be a fully product led business. I understand that the departure of some people from UMe has been unsettling and difficult, but we believe that we treated those that left in a fair and compassionate manner. The Leadership Team (LT) expect all employees to attend the quarterly business updates in person, otherwise we do encourage teams to regularly collaborate, and this easier to do in the office environment. We do not stipulate the frequency of office attendance, but it is important in order to build strong working relationships, share ideas and solve problems. Our aim is to develop cutting edge products, and close working with our colleagues is key to achieving this. As with all organisations, we accept that there are business challenges, but we feel that we have the right structure and are aligned in our approach to overcome them. Thank you again for your feedback. Many thanks, Nana – AVP, People

Pros

UnderwriteMe's benefits package is fairly good and the company offices in Tower Bridge House are a good working environment, if slightly difficult in terms of transport options. However, there is limited fixed desks thus making it harder to go in to the office to any meaningful dedicated work and therefore, I assume that UnderwriteMe will remain largely a flexible / remote-based company. I guess your outlook and personal circumstances determine whether that is a pro or a con.

Cons

Over the past year, UnderwriteMe has undertaken a new direction in terms of product strategy built on the opinions, experience and expertise of a very limited but specific group of people. The expertise, however, does not appear to be based on any deep-level understanding of the insurance industry or the existing UnderwriteMe products. As well as, or maybe because of, the above, there also appears to be a significant shift in the culture of UnderwriteMe which does not feel positive or inclusive to all employees. While this can be dismissed as being as a result of the recent large-scale redundancies, the common thread of other reviews on Glassdoor around the impact of this shift in product direction tells another story.

Thanks very much for taking the time to provide feedback. I am pleased to hear that you are satisfied with the company benefits that UMe offer their employees. We do believe that our Tower Bride office is a great place to work, and we will continue to see how the space can be utilised to ensure teams are able to meet in person when needed. I am disappointed to hear that you do not feel that the culture of UMe is not inclusive. In order to ensure we are developing the right products for our environment; we have had to make difficult decisions that have resulted in some people leaving the business due to redundancy. Whilst we accept that some of the changes have been difficult, The Leadership Team believe that these well thought through changes will ensure we are a successful business. We regularly ask for feedback from our employees through different channels, in order to see how people are feeling, what we do well and what concerns them. Our goal is to ensure we have happy and engaged colleagues. Many thanks for your feedback! Nana – AVP, People

Teething pains with great potential

Pros

The best thing about UnderwriteMe is that nobody is really happy with how things are working right now. One may see this as a negative thing, but the company knows and acknowledges the issues and is trying hard to change things for the better. The company is growing from a small startup that said yes to every single client request, while desperately trying to get users at any cost, to a properly established product-oriented company. This type of change is not an easy thing to do as it takes a massive amount of willpower to accomplish the smallest change. Of course, this also means things are far from perfect and it can get frustrating pretty easily. But as changes keep coming, the products start to get better, new ideas start to take shape, etc, you can see the real potential we have. I believe this company can offer people a unique opportunity to make an impact, apply their expertise, grow, and learn, something that I value quite a lot!

Cons

For me, one of the worst things about UnderwriteMe is the isolation of teams and streams of work within the company. I feel like teams from different products or even areas within a product don't communicate as much as they should. Given the relatively small company size, it seems sensible to have much more sharing of knowledge, idea, tools, etc, at all levels and not just at a management one.

Thank you for taking the time to provide your thoughts on UnderwriteMe (UMe). We are constantly trying to work to ensure that we have the best suited products for our clients, so I am pleased that you have experienced this drive with your colleagues as well. Whilst there is change happening within our organisation, we believe that it will help us to achieve our aim of developing and innovative products that are used widely in the Protection space. We are encouraging teams to come into the office more to work together, and the quarterly UMe business meetings provide the opportunity to socialise with other UMe colleagues. In the coming months we will be looking to see how we can encourage and facilitate more cross team collaboration. Many thanks again for your feedback! Nana. – AVP, People

Pros

Some expensive socials and parties

Cons

Poor tech stack, once good but underinvested and now loaded with tech debt. Treat people like resources. CTO was ousted by CPO to form a CPTO with no understanding of product or technology. Lack of understanding of what a product company is - the CPTO is driving them to be project using agile and product words. A loss-making, wholly Owned by Pacific Life Re, and most likely to be broken up for parts with some sold off to attempt to re-coup the poor investment. Repeat redundancy programmes losing some of the best staff.

Thank you for your feedback. We are sorry to read how you feel since leaving UnderwriteMe. We appreciate that as a business there will be decisions made that will not please everyone. However, every decision, no matter how tough, is made for the collective good of everyone at UnderwriteMe and to help achieve our goals. While we take on your feedback there are false and inaccurate details in your account that need to be clarified. UnderwriteMe has a clear path to profitability, significant investment and is in a healthy financial position. Our future is bright and our recent customer wins and ongoing recruitment drive is testament to that. As part of our business transformation, we have restructured some teams to ensure we are futureproof, high performing and continue to thrive. Any staff who have left the business is because they have not been right for the role, the company and the direction we are heading unfortunately, not for any necessary cost savings. As with any business, we will only invest in the right people in the right roles for our business going forward. Ways in which we care and invest in our people is demonstrated by the influx of new talent coming on board, our low attrition and expensive socials, as you point out. It is a shame you feel like we treat people like resources given how supported you would've been during your time here. We hope you find the right company for you and we wish you all the best for the future.

Pros

still there are some good people around

Cons

The company culture has shifted toward a toxic, micromanaged environment. There’s little focus on meaningful outcomes; instead, emphasis is placed on control and blame. Management can be quick to deflect responsibility, often at the expense of their team
