Pros

I have worked for Express Solicitors for 7 years and I am really happy and proud to work for a company that cares for its employees as well as its clients. When I started 7 years ago I worked in admin and since then I have been a file handler, team leader and now a team manager. Throughout my journey at Express I have always felt encouraged to progress within the firm, and not only that I have also been given the support and opportunity to learn the skills I needed to progress. My manager at Express has been fantastic, I have never felt like she is too busy for me or that a question or issue I have faced has been an inconvenience to her whether that be big or small. I feel like my manager values our opinions and encourages us putting our ideas and opinions forward. We recently moved into a new building and its been great! not only do we have a fresh new space, but we also have access to a roof terrace and free access to the onsite gym which is brilliant and a great perk. Express offers many employee benefits, a few that have stood out to me are the Employee Assistance Program, EDI Network, Football Team, Netball Team, Free Eye Tests up to £25, Bike to Work scheme and more.

Cons

I am very happy working for Express but a few perks that could be added could be: Office WIFI for staff Christmas Holiday (reinstated)

Thank you so much for the 5*review, We are pleased to hear you enjoy working with the business. We always welcome Feedback and you are more than welcome to come and speak with HR about your ideas on how to improve the business so we can look at logistics. The business decided to move away from the Christmas closure to allow staff the freedom to choose how they fully use their holiday entitlement (which has been reflected in the holiday entitlement increase of 3 days), but we welcome your feedback.

Pros

They make you bill as a solicitor, even though all you’re doing is inputting “do not answer” calls into the system, where the clients do not answer and they bill for it. It was a joke it depends on your manager. Mine couldn’t care

Cons

Above … it’s all a con

Thank you for giving us a chance to set the story straight. We record on the history what has happened and that’s because it’s really important for anyone looking at a glance to see what’s happened to demonstrate client care and joined up thinking. There is a big difference between billing and time recording. We do care – that’s why we time record, to show our service pledge in action. We wish you all the best for your future career.

Management made me miserable

Pros

Some nice and friendly people work there who are always happy to have a chat and help you if they can. There are some good learning opportunities for someone at the beginning of their career. Onsite gym - not the biggest but has everything you need Great Equality and Diversity network

Cons

After three months at Express Solicitors, I was already dreading the commute to work. Not because of the workload or upcoming deadlines, but because I found the environment toxic and isolating. My manager regularly belittled me and made me feel stupid for asking questions. If you’re not one of their favourites, expect to feel excluded and unsupported. I often spoke more with other departments than my own team. I would also hear my manager talk about other team members behind their back so I can only imagine what they were saying about me. The office isn't as bad as other reviews make it out to be. You can tell the company have invested a lot of money into it and it is fit for purpose, but the parking situation is poor. You need to arrive by 7:30am at the latest to get a space. Pay isn't great, and management’s lack of trust and empathy made an already demanding job even harder. I started applying elsewhere within months as I was unable to see a future in such a negative culture.

Thank you for your feedback. We have reviewed this in full and would like to set the record straight. We are pleased that you enjoyed working with your colleagues. Express is a firm that has always prided itself on teamwork and a good working culture of togetherness. As well as the benefits and our award-winning Training Programme. We Pride ourselves on our Culture and togetherness that has been integrated into the firm, especially as a Successful top 100 Law Firm. Managers are given coaching and training on how to maximise staff performance, and we maintain an open-door policy for support. There is no favouritism. The Salary provided to Litigation Assistants is incrementally competitive and above most firms in the Manchester area, alongside being given 5 weeks of bespoke training before joining a department, unlike any other firm. In regard to parking, yes, there are limited 100 or so spaces for colleagues to park in. However, compared to City Centre firms (where there is none and if any is very expensive), we have free parking and good alternative parking around the office available to use.

Dreadful company

Pros

You got paid each month

Cons

Awful. You only have to read the defensive responses posted to these reviews to see how genuine issues are overlooked and disregarded by management. Yes you might provide a gym and fruit but you also gaslight employees and undermine genuine concerns about the running of the teams where terrible team members are promoted and rewarded simply for being friends with the manager. You have partners in the firm with little no technical knowledge, relying on the use of external barristers to run their cases whilst junior members of the team are told to use their own brains to find the answer. Negative and sometimes very nasty managers who exert their authority to the point of grinding down junior team members to breaking point. Never experienced a toxic culture like it and never want to again.

These comments are sad for us to hear. I promise we are a listening and thinking organisation – as evidenced by our Top 100 status and steady growth in the past 24 years which we are very proud of. We will continue to do our very best, be guided by the objective metrics, and wish you good luck for your future career.

Thank you for your review and we are pleased that you enjoy working at Express Solicitors and find the benefits of our flexibility and work from home helpful. It’s great to hear that you enjoy the working environment and have a good relationship with your manager. These are absolutely key to a happy work experience. We are, however, disappointed that you feel you are “just another number.” We certainly don’t wish this to be the case. As the firm continues to grow and expand, we don’t want to lose the close-knit community of the firm. We have social events, social & sporting activities & DEI events, to help people feel part of the wider firm. Please do raise with your supervisor or HR if there is anything else we can do to help with this.

Pros

Good to build up legal experience - once employers find out you’ve worked at such a horrid place, they know you have willpower to deal with an excessively high case load.

Cons

The amount of people that use Express as a stepping stone is a joke to the point that my subsequent law firms make fun out of Express all the time. Heads of department and head of HR play favourites with trainees and paralegals and break down the mental health of those who don’t fit their criteria. I had to get permission from my manager to send a STANDARD EMAIL which was so insulting. The managers constantly micromanage because they have nothing better to do with their lives outside of work. Use this firm as a stepping stone if you’re new in the legal world, but plan your exit strategy early before you become miserable.

We appreciate you taking the time to leave us a review. We are sorry to hear that you did not enjoy your time working with us. That being said, we do not agree that we are a revolving door and our retention rates amongst our employees proves that not to be the case. We do know that our competitors do actively search out our employees but that is due to level of training we provide to our junior lawyers. We don’t just train them to click through a system, but ensure they understand the law behind decisions and know why things progress as they do. We are training future legal experts not button pushers. We do have checking measures in place, and all post going in and out is checked as is required by the clients and the SRA. We agree with the importance of this and we are not changing. These requirements ensure that we are providing the best possible service to our clients. If you work for a different law firm, particularly in litigation, that does not operate the same checks, then very best of luck to you. We are proud of our career path which supports and promotes people, currently we have 88 Trainee Solicitors which is fantastic to see
