Pros

Training and personal development opportunities are second to none. Promotion and progression genuinely achievable. Supportive and encouraging senior management. Clearly identifiable and achievable targets. Friendly and helpful staff across all departments. Large modern office with use of a gym.

Cons

Pay transparency/equity above NQ level would be welcome as would salary increases in line with promotions for existing staff.

Thank you so much for the 5*review. We are pleased to hear you are enjoying working with the business. We always welcome Feedback and you are more than welcome to come and speak with HR about your ideas on how to improve the business. We believe the 3/2 hybrid module allows for the best blend of hybrid working for colleagues, as it means you have an equal amount of time in the office and at home to manage cases and workloads. Regarding Pay and Bonuses, we offer regular salary reviews and for those always hitting targets, this is the time to demonstrate why you deserve a pay increase. Regarding Bonus, the scheme is designed to focus on case outcomes rather than focus on concluding cases, but we appreciate the idea.

Pros

Express Solicitors offers a supportive environment for staff and highly encourages development and progression through in house Professional Support and External training. Plenty of opportunity to increase skill base and customer service skills. My own personal experiences with Management across all levels have been nothing but positive. Everyone is very approachable and happy to offer guidance. The team are friendly and supportive of one another. Additional benefits include active social calendar both within Departments and companywide, Equality Diversity and Inclusion Committee, Peer Mentoring Scheme, gym on site, close to local public transport links.

Cons

Parking is a bit of an issue, but as is the case across plenty of large businesses. There is parking local to the building a short walk away.

Thank you so much for the 5-star review. We are pleased to hear you enjoy working with the business. Parking for any business is a struggle, but we agree with you that there are many alternative options available other than our busy car park that are very close and convenient for our colleagues to use.

Thank you for your comments and we are pleased you are happy with colleagues and office space. Sorry to hear your comments about your supervisor. We have carefully developed policies and procedures so it might be the double checking was to assure ourselves about client care rather than micro-managing. If you would like to contact the HR team they would be pleased to understand any issues identified.

We are hugely proud of our promotion structure and have 80 Trainee Solicitors at present – all of whom were promoted from our Litigation Assistants. Our Academy is 5 weeks of paid training by our stellar cast of Professional Support Lawyers and Trainers and we continuously adapt and refine to improve. Pros

The employees are majority lovely and friendly.

Cons

No benefits for employees. Poor pay. Horrible management. Toxic environment. Not good for career development. I would recommend to anyone especially graduates who they target to not go for a job here. It’s a toxic environment and they do not give back to their employees. The work life balance is horrid.

Thank you for your feedback. We have reviewed this in full and would like to set the record straight. We are pleased you enjoyed working with your colleagues as it is a testament to the culture of the business being one of support and growth, with the emphasis on Knowledge sharing. We care about all our employees and invest extremely heavily into benefits, including private healthcare for all after 2 years' service and additionally with benefits across birthdays, electric car, pension, parental leave, jury service and more. Salaries are reviewed yearly and continue to rise with the growth and success of the business. The Management team work continuously to support colleagues develop and grow, giving up time to help if someone isn’t sure on something to shadowing. The career progression at Express Solicitors has always been one of working hard and you will go far, with over 80 trainee Solicitors currently working towards qualifying, we feel this speaks for itself. Express has a focus on promoting and growing from within, and why we do not offer training contracts externally, as we believe that when we hire our graduates, they will be our future Trainees. A career in the law is a demanding but rewarding profession and we provide fabulous benefits and investment into our staff members

Cons

work environment is incredibly toxic, only have to look at how many people are leaving, especially solicitors who have been at the firm for a long time! Management play favourites and out right bully others. No one is happy in that office. And come on all we ever hear about if how much money the firm makes but we dont even have a coffee machine in each kitchen???

Pros

good team nice office good at allowing personal appointments good pay

Cons

toxic office culture. supervisors who gossip about people on their team to other team members. Made to feel bad for being ill. Development given to people who cause lots of issues in the office and are known to management for causing issues but others are not allowed to develop. Constantly brining in new employees but not developing others. Claim client care is everything but don't have the systems in place to allow employees to give proper client care and then employees are left with angry clients. Major issues in the NCT structure. Seem to care more about retaining clients and getting their commission so will sell dreams to clients. Again causing client care issues. A lot of lit assistants and exts are from a BAME background but the partners do not reflect this. Odd working hours, 8:30 to 5:30 for some, unsure why it isn't 9 to 5 for all. No Christmas holidays anymore - whilst the reason is understandable still seems strange when most other firms still offer this.

Thank you for your feedback. We have reviewed this in full and will continue to adapt and refine. We are pleased you are happy with your colleagues and office space. Our working hours are 8.30am to 5.30pm (5pm finish on a Friday) in order to provide good client care availability. It’s true we added 3 days on to everyone’s holiday allowance and removed the formal Christmas break in 2024 to allow our employees greater flexibility with their holidays. We are proud of our NCT colleagues, who work hard to ensure that the client's first point of contact is someone who is able to help them understand the legal process and help them with their claim. All calls are recorded and monitored and we certainly only retain personal injury cases and nothing else: we are specialists at what we do. Express is very proud of the diversity and inclusion within the business, and the EDI committee has a lot of fantastic events planned. The career pathway is clear, fair and attainable for all being based on objective criteria. We always want to help staff succeed and proud of our ability to grow and develop.

NCT is a great department

Pros

Preface - I have only worked in the New Client Team, so can only offer my perspective on NCT. Frankly the best company I have worked for (but the bar is on the ground). Express does foster a good work environment and the people I've worked with have been, for the most part, a delightful bunch. There's honest emphasis on taking care of their employees' wellbeing, they pay a living wage, hard work is recognised and rewarded and anyone struggling is supported. Commission in the pay structure means staff are monetarily rewarded for doing well. Diversity seems to be something they actually care about, rather than just pay lip service to.

Cons

The sickness policy is abysmal, offering 5 days a year of paid sick leave and beyond that unpaid/SSP if entitled to it (compared with my partner's workplace offering 13 weeks full pay and 13 weeks half pay) so if you have any disabilities or chronic health problems, expect to lose pay. Any time off needed for appointments must be made up working overtime, something I have not experienced in any other job. As a result I cannot in good faith recommend working here to anyone with chronic health issues. Working from home is a 50/50 split with everyone expected to still work in the office half the time, despite the fact that the job can be done fully remotely, for seemingly no reason beyond upper management doesn't want people working from home that much.

thank you for your 3* review and comments about the NCT Department. We are really pleased to hear you are happy working here and enjoy the working environment, this has grown throughout the business to be an open-door policy and we value our staff to make sure everyone is doing okay, we have just ran wellbeing sessions in the business (for example the recent free to attend PT Session & Pilates) to help staff. DEI is important, with regular sessions and active engagement, we want to encourage our staff to have a voice in the firm and show off what matters to them. Thank you for your comments on Sick Pay. We offer private healthcare to all staff with 2 years service and receive really excellent feedback about what a help this is. Working and speaking with colleagues face to face allows for better knowledge sharing, support, and coaching when someone is unsure, and better visibility to make sure everyone is doing okay. It also means that any training needs can be delivered quickly, we are a firm that works at helping injured people. We do think strongly about the pillars of wellbeing.

Management made me miserable

Pros

Some nice and friendly people work there who are always happy to have a chat and help you if they can. There are some good learning opportunities for someone at the beginning of their career. Onsite gym - not the biggest but has everything you need Great Equality and Diversity network

Cons

After three months at Express Solicitors, I was already dreading the commute to work. Not because of the workload or upcoming deadlines, but because I found the environment toxic and isolating. My manager regularly belittled me and made me feel stupid for asking questions. If you’re not one of their favourites, expect to feel excluded and unsupported. I often spoke more with other departments than my own team. I would also hear my manager talk about other team members behind their back so I can only imagine what they were saying about me. The office isn't as bad as other reviews make it out to be. You can tell the company have invested a lot of money into it and it is fit for purpose, but the parking situation is poor. You need to arrive by 7:30am at the latest to get a space. Pay isn't great, and management’s lack of trust and empathy made an already demanding job even harder. I started applying elsewhere within months as I was unable to see a future in such a negative culture.

Thank you for your feedback. We have reviewed this in full and would like to set the record straight. We are pleased that you enjoyed working with your colleagues. Express is a firm that has always prided itself on teamwork and a good working culture of togetherness. As well as the benefits and our award-winning Training Programme. We Pride ourselves on our Culture and togetherness that has been integrated into the firm, especially as a Successful top 100 Law Firm. Managers are given coaching and training on how to maximise staff performance, and we maintain an open-door policy for support. There is no favouritism. The Salary provided to Litigation Assistants is incrementally competitive and above most firms in the Manchester area, alongside being given 5 weeks of bespoke training before joining a department, unlike any other firm. In regard to parking, yes, there are limited 100 or so spaces for colleagues to park in. However, compared to City Centre firms (where there is none and if any is very expensive), we have free parking and good alternative parking around the office available to use.

Express Solicitors is a Top 100 law firm and currently rated 3rd for Best Companies Law Firms to work for. There is no sexism or favourtism and we are very proud of our objective metrics which means we have a clear idea of whom is contributing and extremely high levels of client care. It is true work is busy, but we work in a high-performing law firm, and we want to be busy – that is part of the role. We make sure our graduate programme has good levels of training within the 5.5 week programme to help newer members of staff grow and develop their skills. Thereafter, supervisors and our fabulous award-winning Training Team, plus the comprehensive learning management systems, help us to grow, develop and achieve. We want all employees to enjoy their role and feel like they are developing their skills, that’s core to our mission of helping injured people. Please do come and chat to us if you feel you are not being given the tools you need to succeed.
