Pros

Training and personal development opportunities are second to none. Promotion and progression genuinely achievable. Supportive and encouraging senior management. Clearly identifiable and achievable targets. Friendly and helpful staff across all departments. Large modern office with use of a gym.

Cons

Pay transparency/equity above NQ level would be welcome as would salary increases in line with promotions for existing staff.

Thank you so much for the 5*review. We are pleased to hear you are enjoying working with the business. We always welcome Feedback and you are more than welcome to come and speak with HR about your ideas on how to improve the business. We believe the 3/2 hybrid module allows for the best blend of hybrid working for colleagues, as it means you have an equal amount of time in the office and at home to manage cases and workloads. Regarding Pay and Bonuses, we offer regular salary reviews and for those always hitting targets, this is the time to demonstrate why you deserve a pay increase. Regarding Bonus, the scheme is designed to focus on case outcomes rather than focus on concluding cases, but we appreciate the idea.

Pros

Express Solicitors offers a supportive environment for staff and highly encourages development and progression through in house Professional Support and External training. Plenty of opportunity to increase skill base and customer service skills. My own personal experiences with Management across all levels have been nothing but positive. Everyone is very approachable and happy to offer guidance. The team are friendly and supportive of one another. Additional benefits include active social calendar both within Departments and companywide, Equality Diversity and Inclusion Committee, Peer Mentoring Scheme, gym on site, close to local public transport links.

Cons

Parking is a bit of an issue, but as is the case across plenty of large businesses. There is parking local to the building a short walk away.

Thank you so much for the 5-star review. We are pleased to hear you enjoy working with the business. Parking for any business is a struggle, but we agree with you that there are many alternative options available other than our busy car park that are very close and convenient for our colleagues to use.

You won’t want to stay

Pros

Transport links not too bad although if you do drive to work prepare to have to be in early as parking is a nightmare and only the partners are allowed to block each other in - not the rest of the firm

Cons

These comments relate to El team which I would not recommend. Due to the way the team is run they are struggling to get/keep PAs and Legal Secs because of how they are with staff. If your face doesn’t fit or if you are not in with the PA to head of dept you will get nowhere but if you are in the click you will be left alone or if you wfh full time you also get away with everything. Other staff should also be given the opportunity to wfh full time. I agree with the comment about the draconian sick policy unless your face fits then you will be paid no matter how Long you are off. It is always the same people drawing the short straw but no point in saying anything as nothing changes plus if you do say something it goes against you.

Sorry to receive a negative review. We are lucky to offer free parking to our staff. There is a strict policy in place prohibiting blocking another vehicle, which leads to more problems. Common sense must prevail. We are proud to offer a rewarding career and think a lot of our secretarial community, we have our support bonus and private healthcare to all after 2 years service which is a very highly paid benefit. Yes it is 5 days paid sick and yes there is discretion which is reviewed on a number of factors such as longevity, work and attendance and nature of the issue. All aspects are considered in the round. We look after hard working people! There is a clear WFH Policy in place (very fair, 50/50), and we do review attendance.

Thank you for your feedback. We do support employees not only with their careers but also with their physical and mental wellbeing. We offer regular training, defined progression routes, onsite gym, funded football and netball teams, funded social events, free wellbeing helpline, dedicated diversity and inclusion events and regular charity events. We have a performance culture but most people finish on time at 5:30pm, though there will always be exceptions at odd times. We do not have a high turnover, we have around 750 staff and while there are people who do move on, our core stability index remains high. We champion peoples careers – for example we have over 200 people who have qualified as a Solicitor during the 24 years tenure of the Company plus lots of people who have celebrated their 5, 10, 15 and 20 year anniversaries which we are seriously proud of. These long-service award come from all areas and levels of the business. We wish you all the best with your next role.

NCT is a great department

Pros

Preface - I have only worked in the New Client Team, so can only offer my perspective on NCT. Frankly the best company I have worked for (but the bar is on the ground). Express does foster a good work environment and the people I've worked with have been, for the most part, a delightful bunch. There's honest emphasis on taking care of their employees' wellbeing, they pay a living wage, hard work is recognised and rewarded and anyone struggling is supported. Commission in the pay structure means staff are monetarily rewarded for doing well. Diversity seems to be something they actually care about, rather than just pay lip service to.

Cons

The sickness policy is abysmal, offering 5 days a year of paid sick leave and beyond that unpaid/SSP if entitled to it (compared with my partner's workplace offering 13 weeks full pay and 13 weeks half pay) so if you have any disabilities or chronic health problems, expect to lose pay. Any time off needed for appointments must be made up working overtime, something I have not experienced in any other job. As a result I cannot in good faith recommend working here to anyone with chronic health issues. Working from home is a 50/50 split with everyone expected to still work in the office half the time, despite the fact that the job can be done fully remotely, for seemingly no reason beyond upper management doesn't want people working from home that much.

thank you for your 3* review and comments about the NCT Department. We are really pleased to hear you are happy working here and enjoy the working environment, this has grown throughout the business to be an open-door policy and we value our staff to make sure everyone is doing okay, we have just ran wellbeing sessions in the business (for example the recent free to attend PT Session & Pilates) to help staff. DEI is important, with regular sessions and active engagement, we want to encourage our staff to have a voice in the firm and show off what matters to them. Thank you for your comments on Sick Pay. We offer private healthcare to all staff with 2 years service and receive really excellent feedback about what a help this is. Working and speaking with colleagues face to face allows for better knowledge sharing, support, and coaching when someone is unsure, and better visibility to make sure everyone is doing okay. It also means that any training needs can be delivered quickly, we are a firm that works at helping injured people. We do think strongly about the pillars of wellbeing.

Pros

For all those interviewees researching their new potential employer it looks like Express Solicitors have forgotten to add in a new benefit on their job adverts! Now as well as free fruit you also will HAVE TO GET YOUR STEPS IN! because the geniuses over in the management department bought an office space with too few parking spots and then decided to stringently enforce back to work resulting in half the staff parking in the local industrial estate (10 mins walk after your commute!) and getting parking tickets. Or alternatively, you could come in 30-60 minutes early and work for them for free just to get a parking spot. 👍 Not only that, they've only recently gone and removed 10 parking spots for charging electric cars so even less space on the lot for those who can't afford an electric (99% of staff)! They have recently included a gym which is good quality and can't be ignored.

Cons

Not a competitive pay. You work 830-530 (mon - thur) and 830-5 on friday which is 4.5 extra hours per week meaning around 234 hours over a year which is ~33 working days (based on 9-5 work day) so you essentially are paid what they will say is a competitive rate for an extra months work whereas other pi firms work hours are 9-5 and often allow flexi time or more wfh days.

Thank you for your review. We have done everything we can to increase the number of parking spaces and even in our former offices, we did not have enough parking for all staff – not many employers do, unfortunately. We do have excellent bus links and one outside the office; we are close to Benchill tram station - also, we offer the ride2work scheme and great showers, and a drying rack for wet clothes. We do have a 39.5 hour working week and this is clear in all job specs, contracts and yet many of our staff are on varied hours for a variety of reasons, the picture painted here is not fair or accurate. We work hard to be competitive as a Top 100 Law Firm. In April 2024, we significantly invested with increased pay spines, and we continue to invest heavily in training and investment for our people. We are glad you liked the new gym! It is only right to confirm that yes, we do want the 50% office and 50% home working – that is carefully considered and here to stay, we see huge benefits in this blended approach.
